Randolph Leads Saint Peter’s In Defeat Over Canisius On Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, N.J. –  In its final game of the regular season, the Saint Peter's men's basketball team took down Canisius, 70-62, on Sunday at Run Baby Run Arena to stay in contention for the MAAC Tournament.

The Peacocks (12-16, 7-13 MAAC) honored four seniors, Stephon Roberts, Adetokunbo Bakare, Marcus Randolph and Brent Bland before sweeping the Griffs (3-28, 3-17 MAAC) for the fourth time since the 2015-16 season.

Randolph led the charge in the victory, scoring 21 points including a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Three other Peacocks scored double-digit points while four other Saint Peter's players showed up in the scoring column.

Mouhamed Sow recorded his second double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. The Peacocks outrebounded the Griffs 38-to-33 and totaled 17 bench points compared to Canisius' eight.

With the win over the Griffs and Niagara's loss to Rider in the final seconds of the game, the Peacocks' playoff hopes are still alive. They will await the outcome of the Quinnipiac vs. Fairfield game to see if they will be joining nine other teams in Atlantic City, N.J. If Fairfield loses, Saint Peter's will earn the final spot in the MAAC Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST HALF:
The Peacocks jumped out to a quick 5-0 start over Canisius after a steal and layup from Roberts and a 3-pointer from Sow. A couple minutes later, the Griffs tied the game at 7-7 but Bakare knocked down three free throws, putting Saint Peter's up 10-7. Sow hit his second 3 of the game to extend the lead to six.

The Peacocks continued to score on the offensive end of the floor as Tyreck Morris made back-to-back driving layups to make it 19-11. Roberts denied what would have been a huge Canisius dunk with a block which then led to a 3-pointer by Randolph.

With under eight minutes remaining in the first half, Randolph cashed another shot from long range to put Saint Peter's up 27-13. The Griffs started to knock down some shots but the Peacocks had an answer every time as the score showed 33-17 in favor of SPU.

In the closing minutes of the half, Canisius went on an 8-0 scoring run to cut its deficit to eight at 25-33. Bakare cashed a 3-pointer to

SECOND HALF: The Griffs started the second half outscoring the Peacocks 11-4 within the first five minutes to make it a 38-42 game. They hit three 3-pointers to make their way back in it.

Approaching the 10-minute mark, Bryce Eaton hit a corner 3 to bring the Saint Peter's lead back up to 10, but the Griffs responded with a 3-pointer of their own on the other end. Canisius went on a 8-1 run to cut it down to a three-point deficit at 48-51.

Out of a media timeout, Sow drove the baseline for a layup. Eaton then hit a jumper on the next possession to put the Peacocks up 55-48. With a 55-52 lead and 3:26 to go in regulation, Zaakir Williamson was fouled on a layup attempt to head to the charity stripe. He made both free throws to put SPU up five.

A minute later, Bakare hit a crucial corner 3-pointer to give Saint Peter's a 60-52 lead. The Peacocks made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for a 70-62 win over Canisius.

UP NEXT
The Peacocks will have to wait until the conclusion of the Quinnipiac vs. Fairfield game at 7 p.m. ET to see if they make the MAAC Tournament. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
