EASTON, Pa. – The Saint Peter's softball team fell by just one run in both games against Lafayette on Saturday at the Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex. The Peacocks suffered a tough 5-6 loss in the first game before ultimately dropping the second game, 4-5.
In the two games, the Peacocks (5-10) totaled 16 hits and just one error, but it wasn't enough as the Leopards (2-18) picked up their first two wins of the season.
Tai Turner,
Dakota Pitts and
Steph Bendzlowicz led Saint Peter's at home plate, each recording a team-high three hits on the day. Turner also brought in four RBIs for the Peacocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE: The Peacocks dominated the first half of this game as they built a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Turner put Saint Peter's on the board in the first inning with a double that brought
Hannah Klotz home. She then homered in the third and singled in the fourth, adding two more runs to the board.
The Leopards started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning with a two-run homer. They then tied it up at 5-5 in the seventh to send it to extra innings. The Peacocks didn't manage to get a score as their best chance came when
Lauren Czerwinski was called out at home.
Lafayette ended the game, 6-5, in the bottom of the eighth after a single to left field brought in a runner from third.
GAME TWO: Unlike game one, Saint Peter's had to come back from a lead instead of keeping it. The Peacocks were the first on the board again with a single run in the first inning. The Leopards quickly answered with a run in the bottom of the first before adding two more in the second for a 3-1 lead.
They held that lead until Saint Peter's tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth inning after Pitts and Bendzlowicz reached home plate. Lafayette had yet another answer with a two-run homer, taking a 5-3 lead.
Jess Forte hit a home run in the fifth to bring it to a one-run deficit, but the Peacocks couldn't produce any more scores the remainder of the game as they fell, 4-5.
