NORFOLK, VA.- Saint Peter's Softball earned an impressive 7-4 win over Mercyhurst University on Saturday morning at the NSU Softball Stadium.
The early first pitch on Saturday morning did not impede the Peacocks' momentum that carried over from Friday night's win. The bats came out swinging for head coach
Alyssa Ruiz's aggressive lineup. Even with the fast start, Mercyhurst made it an interesting final two innings, but the Peacocks prevailed.
The Peacocks set the tone immediately by pouring on four runs in the top of the first. That early hole turned out to be more than enough to keep the Lakers at a safe distance. Five different Peacocks had one RBI across seven innings. At two different segments in the game, Saint Peter's capitalized on two costly throwing errors from Mercyhurst in the first inning and third inning.
Mercyhurst's Mackenzie Gi put the Lakers on the board in the second inning with an infield single that drove in a run. Mercyhurst added its second run of the game off of a wild pitch from Saint Peter's starter
Morgan Lipansky.
In what put the game to bed from an offensive standpoint,
Steph Bendzlowicz reached first base on a fielder's choice RBI, extending Saint Peter's lead to 7-4 in the bottom half of the sixth inning. The Peacocks held it together in the top of the seventh inning to secure the neutral site win.
With Saturday morning's win over Mercyhurst, the Peacocks moved to a 2-1 record. The team played Norfolk State in the third and final game of the series between the Peacocks and Spartans on Saturday afternoon.
