Men's Basketball Drops Game At Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (11-10, 7-5 MAAC) was defeated 84-73 by Quinnipiac (19-4, 11-1 MAAC) at M&T Bank Area on Thursday. 

The Peacocks dropped their third straight game. QU picked up its tenth straight win and remains first in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings. 

Quinnipiac had five double-digit scorers led by Amarri Tice and Rihards Vaver. Tice and Vaver each scored 18 points, followed by Paul Otieno (15 points), Matt Balanc (12 points), and Lewis Savion (10 points.) Otieno tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Savion distributed a game-high eight assists. 

The Peacocks were led by Roy Clarke. Clarke scored a team-high 17 points with four rebounds, 2 assists, and one steal. Armoni Zeigler matched a career-high 14 points with three rebounds, two assists, and one steal. The SPU freshman shot an efficient 5-10 from the field (50%) and 4-6 from three-point range (66.7%).

How It Happened 

  • Both teams shot it well from beyond the arc in the first half. The Peacocks went 7-13 (53.85%) from three-point range. The Bobcats shot an efficient 15-23 (65.22%)  and 6-10 from three-point range (60%) in the first half. 

  • Elijah Wood hit consecutive three-pointers in the first half. The SPU junior finished the game with eight points and shot 2-2 (100%) from three-point range. The Peacocks trailed 30-20 after Wood hit his second three-pointer at the 7:50 mark.  

  • With 5:50 left in the first half, the Peacocks trailed 33-27 after Zeigler knocked down a three-pointer. QU closed out the half on a 16-5 run and led 49-32 at halftime. 

  • The Bobcats extended their lead to 57-39 when Lewis assisted Otieno for a dunk. The Peacocks answered back with nine straight points to cut the score to 57-48. 

  • Matt Balanc ended the QU scoring drought with a layup and the Bobcats kept SPU at a distance for the remainder of the game. 

  • A layup from Tice built the Bobcats advantage to 74-61 with 4:16 left in the game.

  • In the final two minutes, the Bobcats went 5-6 from the charity stripe and finished the game at 84-73. 

 

Inside The Numbers 

  • Quinnipiac shot 27-46 (58.7%) and 6-12 (50%) from three-point range. 

  • Saint Peter's shot 23-60 from the field and 9-23 from three-point range in the game.

  • The Bobcat's 84 points are the most that Saint Peter's has allowed in a game all season. 

  • Latrell Reid scored in double figures for the 16th game this season. 

  • Saint Peter's had more second-chance points (18-5) and points off turnovers (24-16) than Quinnipiac. 

  • QU outscored SPU in points in the paint 42-28. 

  • SPU fell to 16-8 all-time against Quinnipiac. 
     

    Next, the Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team returns home and hosts Fairfield (14-9, 8-4 MAAC) on 'Alumni Day.' The game tips off at 2 PM and will be on ESPN+.
