JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The Saint Peter's Softball team travels to the Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Maryland, for a doubleheader with the University of Maryland Eastern Shores on Thursday, Feb. 22.
UMES (3-2) picked up wins over Grambling (Feb. 16), Alabama A&M (Feb. 17), and Alcorn State (Feb. 17) at the HBCU Invitational last weekend. UMES outfielder/pitcher Ameenah Ballenger is batting .376 and has tallied one home run, one triple, and a team-high 37 RBIs.
Saint Peter's (1-3) earned a 6-5 victory in nine innings over UMBC on Friday, Feb. 16. SPU trailed 4-0 in the fourth inning. Jess Forte smacked a two-run home run over left field at the top of the sixth inning. Sophie Wilson hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh, which tied the game at 4-4, and Dakota Pitts gave the Peacocks a 5-4 lead with an RBI single to left field. The Retrievers tied up the game after a Peacocks throwing error. In the top of the ninth inning, Maiah Skakal brought in the game-winning run with a sacrifice fly. The Peacocks won their first game over UMBC since 2014, and Dakota Pitts notched her 100th career hit.
Saint Peter's is sixth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings. Iona, Manhattan, Niagara, and Rider open its seasons on Feb. 23. Preseason All-MAAC honoree Cara McNulty currently leads the MAAC in RBIs (six) and has tallied three doubles this month.
Saint Peter's is 9-7 all-time against UMES. The Peacocks have won their last four consecutive games versus the Hawks.
"We are looking forward to getting back on the road for this DH. We look to continue to get ourselves ready for MAAC play," said Saint Peter's head coach Chris Stelma.
