Corey Washington Records Double-Double In Men's Basketball's Win At Iona

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (13-11, 9-6 MAAC) took down Iona (13-12, 8-6 MAAC) 59-53 at Hynes Athletics Center on Sunday. The Peacocks picked up their second win over the Gaels this season. For Saint Peter's, this marked the first regular-season sweep of Iona since the 2019-20 season.  

Corey Washington led the Peacocks with a double-double. The Saint Peter's sophomore shot 4-8 from the field and finished the game with 18 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and one block. This is the third time this season and in his career that Washington has notched a double-double. 

Marcus Randolph was efficient from beyond the arc. Randolph scored 15 points with one rebound, one steal, and one assist. The SPU junior shot 5-8 from the field and 4-5 from three-point range. 

Latrell Reid scored 10 points, with six rebounds, and three assists. This is the 17th game this season Reid has scored 10+ points. 

Both teams shot below 40% in the first half. The Peacocks went on a run in the second half and held off the Gaels for their seventh road win of the season. 

With the victory, the Peacocks moved up to fifth in the MAAC standings. 


How it happened

  • The first half was highlighted by Randolph. Randolph shot a perfect 3-3 from downtown in the first half. The Peacocks took a 17-11 advantage after his second three-pointer. The University of Richmond transfer drained his third three-pointer with 1:22 left in the half which gave the Peacocks a seven-point lead. 

  • Iona's Greg Gordon scored a layup in the first half's final possession. SPU led Iona 26-22 at halftime.  

  • In the second half, Iona's Idan Tretout scored a basket at the 17:26 mark to cut the Gaels deficit to two. The Peacocks answered back with an 8-0 run that featured four points and an assist from Reid. Armoni Zeigler scored a layup to extend SPU's advantage to 10 (36-26).

  • The Gaels were in a scoring drought for over six minutes in the second half (from 11:57 to 5:50). Iona's Panzo Wheza ended the drought at 5:50 with a layup and the Gaels trailed by nine. 

  • Washington closed out the game for the Peacocks. In the final four minutes of the game, the preseason All-MAAC honoree scored eight of SPU's last 13 points. Washington went 6-6 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes and finished the game 9-9. 

  • Iona made a late push. The Gaels trailed by five with 29 seconds left after Gordon added a layup. Free throws from Mouhamed Sow secured the win at 59-53.

Inside The Numbers 

  • Iona committed 14 turnovers and Saint Peter's scored 12 points off turnovers. 

  • There were three lead changes in the game. 

  •  The Gaels finished the game 20-63 (31.7%) from the field. Saint Peter's shot 18-41FG (43.9%). 

  • Iona's Gordon led the Gaels in points (15) and rebounds (12), and distributed two assists with two steals. 

  • This is the second consecutive game that Saint Peter's has won and has held its opponent to 53 points. The Peacocks are 8-0 when they've held opponents to under 60 points this season.  


Next, Saint Peter's (13-11, 9-6 MAAC) travels to Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Maryland for a contest at Mount St. Mary's (11-15, 7-8 MAAC) on Friday, Feb. 23. The game tips off at 7 PM and will be on ESPN+.
