JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team hosts Niagara on Friday, Feb. 2 at Run Baby Run Arena. Prior to the game beer will be sold in the Peacock Cafe as part of 'Beer Night' Presented by New Jersey Beer Co. The game tips off at 7 PM and will be on ESPN+.
Saint Peter's (11-7) has won eight of its last ten games and currently sits at second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference standings under Quinnipiac (16-4, 8-1 MAAC). The surging Peacocks are 7-2 in conference play this season. Niagara (10-10, 6-4 MAAC) is fourth in the MAAC standings.Â
When these teams faced off earlier this season, the Peacocks defeated the Purple Eagles 72-67 at the Gallagher Center on Friday, Dec. 1. Michael Houge led the Peacocks with 19 points, and nine rebounds followed by Latrell Reid with 15 points. Reid scored seven of the last ten points for Saint Peter's in the second half. The Peacocks finished the game shooting 56.8% from the field and 38.1% from three-point range. Yaw Obeng-Mensah led Niagara with 20 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Â
Friday's contest is between elite offense and defense in the MAAC. The Purple Eagles are second in the MAAC in scoring with 76 points per game. The Peacocks are one of the best defensive teams in the country. Saint Peter's is 13th in the nation in defense. The Peacocks have held opponents to 63.4 points per game. SPU is 10-3 when they've held opponents to under 70 points this season.Â
The Peacocks are 5-2 this season at Run Baby Run Arena. Reid has scored in double figures in six straight games, and 14 games total this season. In SPU's most recent game, a 63-52 road win at Siena on Jan. 28, Reid scored a career-high 21 points with two rebounds, two assists, and one block. The Saint Peter's senior is having a career-year as the Peacocks' point guard. Reid is third in the MAAC in assists with 4.4 assists per game. The New Jersey native averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds in January. Corey Washington is seventh in the MAAC in scoring. The preseason All-MAAC honoree is averaging 14.5 points per game this season.Â
Niagara is coming off an 84-78 overtime loss at Manhattan on Sunday, Jan. 28. The Purple Eagles are efficient from the field and from behind the arc. Niagara leads the MAAC in team field goal percentage (47%), and three-point percentage (39%). Niagara's Harlan Obioha is third in the MAAC in rebounding (7.8 rebounds per game) and is second in the MAAC in field goal percentage (.590). This season, Niagara freshman Ahmad Henderson II is averaging a team-high 13.5 points per game. Â
