FAIRFIELD, CT. - The Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (9-6, 5-1 MAAC) had its six game winning-streak snapped at Fairfield (11-7, 5-2 MAAC) 76-67 Friday night at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena.
The Stags shot 50% from the field in the game and were led by Jalen Leach (29 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Brycen Gooden scored 16 points with one rebound and one assist. Gooden shot 50% from the field and 66% from three point range. Peyton Smith dropped 10 points with two rebounds.
Saint Peter's had three players in double figures. Corey Washington scored a team-high 16 points, with a team-high eight rebounds, with one steal. The SPU sophomore shot 6-9 from the field. Latrell Reid added 12 points, three assists, and three rebounds. Marcus Randolph scored 10 points off the bench. Randolph went 4-7 from the field and 2-4 from three-point range.
With the loss, the Peacocks dropped to second in the MAAC standings. This is the first defeat in over a month for SPU.
How it Happened

The first half was tightly contested as the lead changed six times between both teams.

At 15:23 in the first half, Reid assisted Mouhamed Sow for a layup. Roy Clarke followed it up with a jump shot which gave the Peacocks an early 12-8 advantage.

Later in the half, Elijah Perkins blocked a shot at the rim, which initiated a SPU fast break. Reid scored layup on the other end and gave the Peacocks a 17-15 lead with under 10 minutes left in the half.

6:05 before halftime, Washington scored two straight baskets for the Peacocks. Reid connected with Washington for a contested bucket in the paint. Washington added a layup at the 4:57 mark which put the Peacocks up 23-21.

In the final four minutes of the first half, the Stags went on a 11-0 run.

A jump shot from Fields put the Stags up 33-22. Armoni Ziegler knocked down a three-pointer as time expired and the Peacocks trailed 35-28 at halftime.

Fairfield extended their lead in the second half. The Peacocks cut the deficit to five with 9:06 left in the game. Stephon Roberts grabbed the board on defense and completed a Peacocks fast break with a layup, this put the score at 49-44.

Fairfield responded with a 12-2 run. A free throw and layup from Fairfield's Birima Seck extended the Stags lead to 61-46 with 5:32 left in the game.

Consecutive three-pointers from Randolph and a layup from Armoni Zeigler cut the score to 74-67 with under a minute in the contest. The Stags closed out the game with a pair of free throws which put the final score at 76-67.

Saint Peter's and Fairfield both had 25 bench points and 38 points in the paint.

The Peacocks had more points off turnovers (11-10) and second chance points (13-12) than the Stags.

Next, Saint Peter's (9-6, 5-1 MAAC) hosts Canisius (7-10, 2-5 MAAC) on Sunday, Jan. 21 at Run Baby Run Arena for their second meeting. The Peacocks defeated the Griffs 54-52 earlier this season on Dec. 3. The game tips off at 2 PM and will be on ESPN+.
