Men's Basketball Aims For Seventh Win In A Row Friday At Fairfield

JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The red-hot Saint Peter's Men's Basketball team (9-5, 5-0 MAAC) travels to Leo D. Mahoney Arena for a conference game against Fairfield (10-7, 4-2 MAAC) on Friday, Jan. 19. The Peacocks are going for their seventh win in a row. The game tips off at 7 PM and will be on ESPN+. 

Overview
During Saint Peter's winning streak, the Peacocks have defeated UMBC (Dec. 12), Kean (Dec. 22), Bucknell (Dec. 30), Iona (Jan. 5), Mount St. Mary's (Jan. 7) and Manhattan (Jan. 14). Saint Peter's is currently first in the MAAC with a perfect 5-0 record in conference play. The best start Saint Peter's has ever had in MAAC play was when the Peacocks started conference play 8-0 during the 1987-88 season.

Most recently, the Peacocks cruised past Manhattan 81-68 on Sunday, Jan. 14 at Draddy Gymnasium. Latrell Reid notched his second-career double-double on 11 points and a career-high 11 assists. The last Saint Peter's player to record 10+ assists in a game was Mathew Lee vs. La Salle (Nov. 27, 2020). 

The Peacocks had four players score in double figures. Corey Washington scored 17 points with seven rebounds, one assist, one steal, and one block. Roy Clarke dropped a season-high 15 points with two rebounds, two assists, and one block. Clarke shot an efficient 5-9 (55%) from the field and 1-1 (100%) from three-point range. Armoni Zeigler tied a career-high 14 points with four rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Saint Peter's shot 27-58 (46.6%) from the field and scored 16 points off turnovers. Manhattan's Daniel Rouzan led the Jaspers with 22 points, six rebounds, and four assists.  

This matchup features the second best-offense in the MAAC against the second-ranked defense. The Peacocks are second in the MAAC in defense (63.8 points per game). On the glass, Saint Peter's is third in the MAAC in offensive rebounds (12.4 per game) and rebounding margin (3.7). The Peacocks have held every MAAC opponent to under 70 points this season.

Washington leads Saint Peter's with 13.8 points per game. The SPU sophomore is seventh in the MAAC in scoring . Washington has scored 20+ points in four games this season. In January, Washington has shot 48.7% from the field, 66% from three-point range, and has averaged 20.6 points per game.

Reid is averaging a team-high 4.4 assists per game this season which ranks fourth in the MAAC. The New Jersey native has scored in double figures in 10 games this season.  Brent Bland is eighth in the MAAC in steals with 23 this season. 

The Stags average 76.3 points per game and are third in the MAAC standings. Fairfield has three of the top 12 individual scorers in the MAAC. Caleb Fields is fifth in the MAAC (14.3 ppg) followed by Brycen Gooden at ninth (13.4 ppg), and Jalen Leach who is 12th in the MAAC with 13.1 ppgFairfield is coming off an 88-63 road win at Canisius (7-9, 2-4 MAAC) on Monday, Jan. 15, 88-63. Five Stags scored in double figures led by Peyton Smith who dropped 17 points. Smith went 6-10 from the field. Caleb Fields scored 16 points. The Fairfield senior shot 60% from the field and 4-7 from three-point range.

Saint Peter's is 64-63 versus Fairfield all-time. In the last matchup, Saint Peter's defeated Fairfield 70-52 in the first round of the 2023 MAAC Tournament (Mar. 7, 2023).
