NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY. - The Saint Peter's men's basketball team opened up conference play with a 72-67 win over Niagara Friday night at the Gallagher Center.
Michael Houge led the Peacocks with 19 points and nine rebounds in the game. The SPU junior produced offensively in the first half with 15 points on 6-8 FG (75%) and shot 67% from three-point range. With 3:40 left before halftime, Saint Peter's went up 34-28 after Houge completed a Peacocks fast break with a three-point shot in transition. Elijah Wood closed out the first half with two three-pointers in the final three minutes. The Peacocks led by five at halftime.
Latrell Reid dropped 15 points in the game. Reid shot a near-perfect 6-7 FG and went 100% from three-point range. Additionally, Corey Washington made his return to the Peacocks' lineup. In the second half, Washington scored six straight points for the Peacocks. The Arkansas native hit a layup and two mid-range jump shots which built SPU's advantage to 11 at the 14:52 mark in the second half.
Niagara answered back with a run of its own and trailed 64-61 with five minutes left in the game. Reid scored seven of the last ten points for Saint Peter's down the stretch. The SPU senior knocked down a jump shot and extended the SPU lead to six at 3:42 left in the game. With one second left, Reid iced the game with a pair of free throws and Saint Peter's won 72-67. The Peacocks never trailed in the second half.
Next, the Peacocks travel to Buffalo for a game at Canisius on Sunday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is at 1 PM and the game can be watched on ESPN+.
