Men’s Soccer Opens Campaign at Home Versus VMI Thursday

The Kick Off

• The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team will get the 2022 season underway Thursday afternoon as they host VMI at Jaroschak Field.
• The Peacocks are coming off of an successful 2021 season, which saw the team post a record of 8-9-1, while posting a 6-3-1 record in conference play and earning the two seed in the MAAC Tournament. This was their fourth consecutive season qualifying for the postseason.
• Saint Peter's will look to secure their third opening win in four seasons on Thursday, after defeating Fairfield 4-3 at home in 2020 and St. Joseph's in 2019 by a score of 2-1 on the road.

Series with the Keydets

• Saint Peter's will face off against VMI for only the second time.
• The Peacocks won the last meeting back in 2019 by a score of 5-0 in Lexington, Virginia.
• Senior defender Bernhard Bratsberg and assistant coach Tom Coulson each recorded assists in the contest.
• The Keydets finished with a 1-16-1 record in 2021.

Meet the Squad

• Head coach Julian Richens enters his 12th season as the leader of the men's soccer program. 
• In 2019, he was the unanimous selection as the MAAC Men's Soccer Coach of the Year. 
• His staff consists of Tom Coulson and Steve Cedeno, two former players under Richens at SPU, and Ferry Smedema. This will be Coulson's second season, while Cedeno and Smedema kick off their first season at Saint Peter's.
• Guillem Badens Mecho, Brian Carvalhoso, Marco Torino, and Tim Fafian are back as they will continue at Saint Peter's as graduate students. Matt Hoyt also returns as a fifth year.
• The Peacocks will return four seniors to this year's squad. Tom Climpson returns to captain the Peacocks after providing four goals and an assist last season. He was also named to the All-MAAC Second Team in 2021. Bernhard Bratsberg, Fabian Schmid, and Herman Wulff complete the senior class.
• The junior class consists of both redshirts and true juniors. Brian Neves, Roodlenscky Charles, and Antonio Green make up the redshirts, while Conlan Paventi and Bryan Gomez make up the true juniors.
• The sophomore class is the smallest amongst the groups of returning players. Daniel Blackmore, who was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2021, and Charlie Hare make up the sophomore class.
• The Peacocks will field a bunch of redshirt freshmen this season, which include Ricardo Vieira, Jeremy Gonzalez, Miguel Torres, and Kevin Sabadin.
• The team added plenty of new faces this offseason, signing a graduate student,, a sophomore, and six freshmen. Cherokee Briard is the lone graduate student and he comes by way of France. Mikkel Fodstad transfers in as a sophomore from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Reiss Skeen and Lex Vaughan add to the English pipeline, hailing from Kent and Southampton, England, respectively. Tim Strele, Sean Cadigan, Teodor Linn, John Hallgren, and Omre Etienne round out the 2022 squad.
