Softball Drops Opening Contest of Spring Break Trip Against Presbyterian

Wilson drives in lone run of the game for the Peacocks

CLINTON, S.C. (March 4, 2022) - After an unusual travel situation and the game being pushed back a few hours, the Saint Peter's University softball team dropped a 10-1 decision against Presbyterian College Friday at PC Softball Complex to open the Scotsman Invitational.

Top Performers

  • Junior Sophie Wilson had the big blow in the game for the Peacocks as she delivered an RBI double in the fourth to plate the only run of the game for SPU.
  • Junior Olyvia Smith led the game off with a single and has now hit safely in four of the Peacocks' first five contests of 2022.
  • Senior Katie Sciglimpaglia did her job effectively in the contest at the plate, laying down a sacrifice bunt in the first and collecting a single up the middle to finish the game 1 for 1.

How it Happened

  • The Blue Hose scored in every inning of the contest, striking first in the bottom half of the opening inning on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Presbyterian pushed the edge to 3-0 with two runs in the second and 5-0 with a pair of runs in the third, scoring runs on a triple, a double, a single and a sac fly.
  • In the fourth, freshman Sciglimpaglia reached first base safely on a base hit but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice that put freshman Dakota Pitts on first base.
  • Pitts was able to round the bases one batter later as Wilson laced a double into left field to make the score 5-1.
  • The Blue Hose broke things open in the bottom half of the fourth, scoring five runs all with two outs.
  • After freshman Nicole Antuna got the first two batters of the inning on flyouts, Presbyterian used a double, a walk, a single, an error and a three-run home run to push the lead to nine.
  • The Peacocks were unable to mount a comeback, as Kourtney Ketcham was stranded at first in the fifth to seal the run-rule win for Presbyterian.

From the Dugout (Head Coach Chris Stelma)

  • "It was great to get out in the warm weather today. We had a wild few days to get down here. Our administration really fought to get us down here in time."
  • "The team became far more resilient today and we got to see a speed of game that will really pay off when conference play comes around."

Next Up

  • SPU will return to the diamond Saturday with a doubleheader against Youngstown State University and Presbyterian at 10:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.
