Men’s Basketball Drops Clash with Siena Sunday

Peacocks drop to third place in the MAAC standings

ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2022) - In a matchup of two of the top three teams in the MAAC standings, Siena College shot 52.8 percent from the floor and 45.5 from 3-point range to take down the Saint Peter's University men's basketball team 84-70 Sunday inside MVP Arena.

The Saints became just the second MAAC team to score at least 80 points in a game against the Peacocks as they improved to 13-10 overall and 10-5 in MAAC play while SPU dropped to 12-11 and 10-6 in the conference.

Junior Daryl Banks III led all scorers with 16 points in the loss as the Peacocks fell into third place in the MAAC standings.

Siena, meanwhile, led wire-to-wire in the contest and had five different players in double figures in the win.

Senior KC Ndefo joined Banks III in double figures with 10 points while Isiah Dasher finished with nine.

How it Happened

  • Siena came out of the gates hot with 11 of the first 14 points of the game to take an eight-point lead less than three minutes into the contest.
  • Trailing 17-7, the Peacocks climbed back to within four after a quick 8-2 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Doug Edert.
  • With the score 28-23 in favor of the Saints, Siena closed the half on a 16-6 run to push the lead back up to double figures and head into the locker room on top 42-29.
  • SPU started the second half with a 3-pointer from Banks III and a layup from Ndefo to cut the deficit back down to eight.
  • After Fousseyni Drame hit a free throw to make the score 53-46 with 14:16 remaining, Siena went on an 8-1 run to take their largest lead of the game at 61-47 after a pair of free throws from Javian McCollum.
  • From that point on, the Peacocks were unable to cut the deficit to less than 12 points, falling by double figures for the first time in MAAC play and the fourth time overall this season.

Inside the Numbers

  • Siena was phenomenal shooting the ball from everywhere, including the free throw line where they went 18 for 19 in the contest. Conversely, SPU finished just 10 of 19 from the stripe.
  • Jaylen Murray, Edert and Fousseyni Drame all finished the contest with eight points for the Peacocks. Drame nearly totaled a double-double with eight points and eight boards.
  • Hassan Drame led SPU in rebounds with nine in the game, the third-most he has had in a game this season.
  • The Peacocks shot the ball well from the floor at 49.1 percent but went just 4 for 13 from downtown.
  • The Saints held a 15-8 edge in fastbreak points with 10 of their first 15 points of the game coming on the break.
  • SPU was able to do damage down low with a 46-30 edge in points in the paint.
  • It is the first time Siena has swept the season series against the Peacocks since the 2009-10 season.

Next Up

  • The Peacocks return to action Friday night when they travel to West Long Branch, N.J., to take on Monmouth University at 7:00 p.m.
