JERSEY CITY, NJ - On a night where the Peacocks honored the past with a ring and banner ceremony for the 2021-22 team, the Saint Peter's University men's basketball team celebrated a 73-59 win under first year head coach Bashir Mason, defeating the NJIT Highlanders. Freshman forward Corey Washington led the team with 18 points in his Peacock debut.
The Peacocks scored the first 17 points of the game over the first 5:55 and never looked back, leading by as many as 25 before ultimately winning by the 14-point margin.
Washington showed out in his first game in a Saint Peter's uniform. He played 26 minutes in the contest, scoring 18 points and shooting 100% from the field. He also led the Peacocks in rebounds with eight.
The Peacocks made six threes in the contest, including two in the first half from sophomore guard Jaylen Murray. His second three of the game put the Peacocks up 33-13 with 5:07 left in the first half. Murray also grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists. Redshirt freshman guard Brent Bland hit a three pointer at the first half buzzer that sent Run Baby Run Arena into a frenzy. The Peacocks led 41-20 at the half.
Saint Peter's came out of the break still on fire from the first half, as graduate guard Jayden Saddler and senior guard Alex Rivera each made buckets to extend the SPU lead to 25, the largest lead of the night.
With all of the turnover in the team, the Peacocks received 37 points combined from transfers and freshman on the night. The offensive glass turned out to be key for the Peacocks as they grabbed 12 offensive boards and scored 15 second chance points. The team also never trailed in the contest.
Inside the Numbers
- SPU held a 34-24 advantage in paint points.
- The Peacocks won the battle at the FT line despite having fewer attempts. They shot 15-19 (78.9%) while NJIT went 17-27 (63.0%).
- Bench points were won on the night by SPU, 33-17.
- 12 Peacocks saw the floor while 11 scored.
- Fifth year guard Isiah Dasher had nine points on three-of-four shooting.
- Graduate guard Jayden Saddler recorded eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.
