Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Downs Sacred Heart Saturday Afternoon

JERSEY CITY, NJ- The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team beat Sacred Heart University by a score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The goals were scored by graduate defender Anton Moore and junior defender Tom Climpson. Senior midfielder Jamie Davis provided both assists.

Game Notes:

  • The Peacocks started the game on the right foot, getting a couple of shots on target early via freshman midfielder Alex Costa and senior defender Brian Carvalhoso that were both saved.
  • In the 14th minute, Davis whipped in a cross off of a free kick that was headed home through the keeper's legs by Moore to give the Peacocks a 1-0 lead.
  • The Pioneers had chances throughout the first half, but their best chance came at the 35th minute mark that required a heroic diving save by graduate goalie Guillem Badenes Mecho to keep the Peacocks in front. The score would remain 1-0 at halftime.
  • Less than a minute after the second half began, graduate defender Kevin Van Der Pol rattled the crossbar with a strike from about 12 yards out.
  • Less than a minute later, the Peacocks scored their second goal of the game. The goal was very similar to the first, with Davis providing another assist off of a free kick and finding the head of Climpson, who headed the ball into the top right corner.
  • Despite numerous attacks by the Pioneers, the Peacocks played tough the rest of the way to earn the clean sheet and their second win of the young season.

Inside the Numbers:

  • The win boosts the Peacocks to 2-0 at home this season.
  • Moore's goal was his first of the season and the second of his career.
  • Climpson's goal was his second of the season and the third of his career.
  • Davis' two assists increased his team highs in both assists (5) and points (9).
  • Graduate goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho notched his first clean sheet as a Peacock, making four saves in the process.
  • Saint Peter's registered 12 shots, eight of which were on target (66.67%).
  • Davis, senior forward Matt Hoyt, freshman midfielder Alex Costa, senior forward Matt Hoyt, junior midfielder Fabian Schmid, as well as junior defender Brian Neves were all issued yellow cards.

Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens:

  • We managed a good balance on both sides of the ball today. We created some good opportunities as well as the two goals.
  • Keeping a clean sheet is good for the confidence of the team at this stage. There were some real committed performances throughout the 90 minutes and they [the team] have deserved that.

  • Saint Peter's finishes up their out-of-conference slate when they host Lafayette College on Tuesday, September 21st, with kick off scheduled for 3 p.m.
