Softball Falls in Twin Bill at Marist on Friday

Peacocks defeated by Red Foxes Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Saint Peter's University softball team faced off against Marist in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader on Friday afternoon, with the Red Foxes securing wins in both contests. The first game finished in a 7-3 decision for the hosts, despite it being a one-run game as late as the bottom of the sixth inning. The Red Foxes were in control for all of Game 2, taking a 12-2 win through six innings.

Game 1 Notes:
  • Junior Katie Sciglimpaglia would record the Peacocks' first hit of the day in the top of the first with a line drive to left center, but the team would not capitalize in the opening frame.
  • The Red Foxes then took an early lead after going up 2-0 in the bottom of the frame.
  • Saint Peter's responded in the second inning, as freshman Maiah Skakal doubled to right field and would score moments later off smart baserunning in conjunction with junior captain Anja Solveig Kane.
  • After another Marist run came in the bottom of the second brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the hosts, while both sides would go scoreless through the third frame.
  • Kane and Skakal combined for another Saint Peter's run in the fourth inning, as Kane singled to center field, which was enough to bring in Skakal from second base, cutting Marist's lead back to a single point (3-2).
  • The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Red Foxes were eventually able to add four more runs to their tally, and would go on to win 7-3.
Game 2 Notes:
  • The Red Foxes got out to a hot start in Friday's rematch, notching a 4-0 advantage after the opening frame.
  • Once again the Peacocks wasted little time in responding, as sophomore Cara McNulty doubled to left-center field, which brought in classmates Brandi Feeney and Sophie Wilson to bring the score to 4-2.
  • The rest of the contest was controlled entirely by Marist, as the Red Foxes posted three runs in the third inning, one run in the fifth, and finished the game in the sixth inning with four runs to finish the game at 12-2.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Feeney now leads the team in runs scored this season, registering her eighth of the year on Friday.
  • After her RBI in Game 1, Kane is tied for second on the team for RBI's on the season with seven, splitting the ranking with Feeney.
  • Skakal and McNulty each finished the day with a double, while Skakal recorded the team's lone stolen base of the day.
Coach's Quotes - Chris Stelma:
  • "The ladies played hard through a tough stretch of 10 games in 7 days which will continue into tomorrow."
  • "We handled the bats pretty well today but have to work on giving a consistent effort to do the things that will help us win."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks return to Jersey City this weekend for a four-game series against Niagara from May 1-2. Saturday's games will begin at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m., while Sunday's slate features start times of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Additionally, Sunday will feature the team's annual Senior Day ceremony prior to Game 1.
