Softball Defeated by Siena on Saturday Afternoon

Peacocks fall in doubleheader to Saints in Loudonville

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Saint Peter's University softball team fought hard on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately dropped its twin bill against Siena by scores of 9-1 and 2-1. The first game reached its conclusion after five innings, as the lone Saint Peter's run came off an RBI from junior Marissa Morales, which brought in junior Katie Sciglimpaglia for the run.

The Peacocks would not go away easily, however, and played the Saints to an 11-inning, 2-1 decision in the day's second game. Saint Peter's got on the board early in Game 2, as sophomore Bailey Hartman sent a shot into left-center field, recording an RBI double, which brought in classmate Brandi Feeney. The Saints were able to level the score in the bottom of the fourth inning, but it would remain tied at 1-1 for another seven and a half frames. The hosts finally broke through in the bottom of the twelfth inning, taking the 2-1 win.

Game 1 Notes:
  • A big second inning for the Saints led to their victory in Game 1, as Siena was able to bring in seven runs before the last out of the frame.
  • Junior pitcher Christina Colon would then hold the Saints scoreless over the next two innings, as the hosts maintained their 7-0 lead.
  • Morales' RBI in the fifth would breathe some much-needed life into the Peacocks offense, as Sciglimpaglia scored the team's first run of the day.
  • Two conceded Siena runs in the bottom of the fifth would see Saint Peter's efforts come up short in Game 1, however.
Game 2 Notes:
  • After each side started scoreless through the first inning of Game 2, Hartman was able to hit a shot to left center for her second career double, giving the Peacocks a 1-0 lead after Feeney scored the run.
  • Junior pitcher Sydney Senerchia was able to keep Siena at bay through the first three innings, as the North Branford native did not concede a hit through the opening frames.
  • A Siena run in the fourth would then tie the game at 1-1.
  • Senerchia would continue her impressive performance, denying the Saints a hit through the next three innings, and allowing only three more throughout the remainder of the game.
  • The deciding score would come from the Saints in the bottom of the eleventh inning, as Siena scored the winning run with runners on first and second with two outs.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Through 21 innings pitched on the year, Senerchia has allowed just one run and 10 hits while tallying 13 strikeouts thus far.
  • Hartman's RBI stands as her first of 2021 and the third of the sophomore's career.
  • Sciglimpaglia led the team in batting on the day, going 4-of-8 at the plate through the two games.
  • The game is the second contest in four outings in which the Peacocks have gone into extra innings against their opponents, following their 12-inning season opener against Manhattan on March 27.
Coach's Quotes - Chris Stelma:
  • "Couple well fought battles today. We are getting quality starting pitching especially from Syd Senerchia."
  • "We took better swings today but has to get stronger through the entire order."
Up Next:
  • The Peacocks remain in Loudonville for another doubleheader against the Saints on Sunday, April 11. Due to expected weather, Sunday's games will now be played at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m.
