Men’s Soccer Falls in Road Tilt at Siena on Thursday

Peacocks lose 3-1 decision to Saints in first loss of 2020-21

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team was dealt its first loss of the season on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 3-1 decision at Siena. Battling through rain and snow, senior forward Jordan Jowers was able to net the team's lone goal of the day in the 73rd minute, but a stout Saints defense would fend off the remaining offensive efforts from the Peacocks.

Game Notes
  • Jowers and junior forward Matt Hoyt managed to fire the first two Saint Peter's shots of the day inside the first 10 minutes of play, but both attempts would miss high and right.
  • Neither side was able to get a shot on target in the first half until Siena broke through with its first goal of the day at the 43' mark, finishing a set play off a corner kick from the far side to go up 1-0.
  • Junior midfielder Jamie Davis found the mark for the Peacocks' first shot on goal in the 53rd minute but it was denied by the Siena keeper.
  • The Saints moved the ball back to the other end of the field quickly and, capitalizing off confusion following a Siena corner, scored their second goal of the day off a loose ball in the box at the 56' mark.
  • Jowers was finally able to break the ice in the 73rd minute, firing in a shot unassisted that found the bottom left corner of the Siena goal unattended to bring the score to 3-1.
  • The Peacocks were able to tally two more shots on goal before the final whistle blew, but all attempts were brought up short by the Siena goalkeeper.
Inside the Numbers
  • Jowers has now scored four goals on the season, retaining his top spot on the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) goals leaderboard.
  • Jowers also finished the day as the only player from either side with multiple shots on goal.
  • Saint Peter's tallied 11 shots on the day compared to nine from Siena, but the hosts proved to be the more efficient strikers with six of their shots finding the target compared to four from the Peacocks.
  • The Peacocks held a slight advantage with corner kicks, gaining four chances from the corner while the Saints finished with three corner kicks.
Coach's Quotes - Julian Richens
  • "Probably sat a little too deep in the first half. Priding ourselves on our defensive set pieces, we conceded two today, one just before half time that doesn't usually happen."
  • "We gave it a real go in the last 20 minutes but credit to Siena, they were tough to break down."
  • "Now look forward to celebrating our senior group on Saturday who have been fantastic on the field and in the classroom for this program."
Up Next
  • The Peacocks return to the Garden State where they will take on Niagara in their annual Senior Day game on Saturday, April 3 at 4 p.m.
