JERSEY CITY, NJ- The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team beat Quinnipiac University by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday. Senior forward Matt Hoyt scored both goals and was assisted by senior midfielder Jamie Davis both times.
Game Notes:
- Graduate goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho made two saves before the twenty minute mark in the first half to keep the score level at zero.
- From there, the Peacocks picked up the pace, recording two shots without allowing Quinnipiac to get a sniff of goal. The score would remain tied 0-0 at the half.
- Less than a minute after the break, Hoyt got on the score sheet to stun the Bobcats. Davis played a beautiful pass that Hoyt placed perfectly into the bottom right corner to put the Peacocks on top.
- Quinnipiac tried to answer quickly, but Badenes Mecho made two saves over the next four minutes to keep the score tied.
- Davis and sophomore forward Matt Ellis had great chances to extend the lead in the 67th minute, but their attempts were saved.
- Hoyt doubled the lead in the 81st minute off of another brilliant feed from Davis. This time, Hoyt used his left foot, but placed the ball in the same spot.
- Quinnipiac would score a penalty late, but it would not be enough as the Peacocks would hold on to win.
Inside the Numbers:
- With the Peacocks win and Rider's loss to Manhattan today, the Peacocks can enter the MAAC tournament no lower than the second seed. They can clinch the one seed and home-field advantage throughout the tournament with a Marist loss tonight.
- Hoyt's goals were his fifth and sixth on the season and the seventh and eighth of his career.
- Davis' assists were number 23 and 24 of his career and 11 and 12 on the season. He trails only Lee Nicola '92 by five assists for all-time career assist leaders at Saint Peter's.
- Saint Peter's registered nine shots and six on target. Hoyt and Ellis led the way with two, both were on target.
- Badenes Mecho made six saves.
- Graduate defender Anton Moore and sophomore forward Conlan Paventi were issued yellow cards.
