JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Nov. 23, 2021) - With the score 58-57 with less than 30 seconds left in the game, Saint Peter's University junior men's basketball student-athlete Doug Edert was able to rise up above a defender and knock down a huge 3-point bucket while getting fouled in the process and proceeded to hit the free throw to help the Peacocks grab a 64-62 win over Long Island University Tuesday inside Run Baby Run Arena.
It is the first win of the young season for the Peacocks as they improve to 1-2 while dropping LIU to 0-4 on the season despite a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double effort by Eral Penn.
Edert led all scorers in the game with 17 including a pair of big baskets down the stretch, the first of which was a driving layup with just over 2:00 to play to swell the lead back to three after the Sharks climbed back within one at 54-53. SPU also got double-digit efforts from both junior Daryl Banks III and fellow classmate Fousseyni Drame as they each tallied 10 points in the win.
After a tight opening half of play, SPU was able to create some separation with a 10-2 run that spanned the end of the first and the start of the second half capped off by a jumper from Isiah Dasher to make the score 38-29 with 15:27 left to play.
The lead swelled to as many as 12 points when junior Hassan Drame knocked down a jumper at the 7:18 mark of the second period to bring the score to 49-37.
The Sharks responded in a big way, however, as Penn and Tyrn Flowers teamed up to score 14 of LIU's next 16 points as a part of a 16-5 run to cut the deficit back down to one at 54-53 and set up for Edert's heroics in the final two minutes of game action.
