Men’s Basketball Grinds Out Second Straight Win; Peacocks Topple Stony Brook Tuesday Night

Box Score | Highlights

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Saint Peter's University men's basketball team won its second straight contest after dispatching Stony Brook on Tuesday night at the John Moore Athletics Center, as the Peacocks toppled the Seawolves by an 82-68 margin to pick up their second victory in three tries to start the 2020-21 campaign.

After a back-and-forth opening half that ended with the hosts leading by five, Saint Peter's built as large as a 23-point lead over the course of the second stanza and held off a late Seawolves charge to preserve the win. Four different players scored in double-digit figures for the second time in three games led by a career outing from junior Dallas Watson, who finished with 18 in 27 minutes while adding three boards, two dimes and two steals.

The Basics
Score:  Saint Peter's 82, Stony Brook 68
Records: Saint Peter's (2-1) | Stony Brook (0-1)
Location: John Moore Athletics Center | Jersey City, N.J.

How It Happened
  • Each team went basket-for-basket at the onset, as the game reached the first media break after a 3-point splash from sophomore Doug Edert to give Saint Peter's a slim 9-8 edge.
  • After both sides traded triples, the Seawolves pushed ahead with another three-ball to grab what was their largest lead of the game at that point (18-14) before sophomore Hassan Drame countered with a deep bucket of his own to make it a one-point game with 12:03 left in the first.
  • With the score level at 22-22, Saint Peter's scored three straight baskets – including a deep ball from graduate transfer Tarojae Brake – to grab a seven-point lead, and that momentum swing carried them through to the half, which was capped off by a buzzer-beating layup from rookie Oumar Diahame to send the hosts into the midpoint leading by five (40-35).
  • Stony Brook roared out of the gate to start the second half after back-to-back 3-pointers to give the visitors a one-point lead, but that lead lasted nearly 30 seconds before sophomore Fousseyni Drame answered with a triple of his own, and that would give the Peacocks a lead they would never relinquish.
  • The home side would wrest control of the game with a 30-6 run that lasted nearly 10 minutes and ended with a layup by Brake that gave the Peacocks their largest lead of the evening at 70-43 with under nine minutes to play.
  • The Seawolves were forced to play catchup from there on out and got as close as 11 with just over five minutes remaining, but Saint Peter's would close the game out on a 10-7 run and clamped down when it mattered most to earn another hard-fought victory.
Highlights
  • Watson finished with one of his best performances as a Peacock, turning in a career-best 18 points over 27 minutes on 6-of-10 shooting (2-3 3PT); he also added three boards, two assists and two steals to fill out his scoresheet.
  • Additionally, Fousseyni Drame (13 points), junior KC Ndefo (12) and Brake (10) all were in double figures in scoring, the latter accounting for his highest output yet as a Peacock.
  • Ndefo would share the game's lead in steals (3) with Fousseyni Drame, while his three blocks led all players.
  • Tuesday's outing was the most proficient one from an offensive standpoint this season, as the Peacocks set new single-game highs in virtually every category, including points (82), made baskets (31) and made 3-pointers (12).
  • The defense certainly shined as well, setting new high-water marks for the season in steals (12) and blocks (5).
  • Saint Peter's shot 47 percent from the floor (31-66) and well over 50 percent from downtown (12-22, 54.5%) while coming up clutch at the line (8-10, 80%).
