Opening Tip
  • The Saint Peter's men's basketball squad begins its 39th Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) season on Friday Jan. 3, at four-time defending MAAC champion, Iona College.
  • The Peacocks and Gaels will tip at 7 p.m. on ESPN+ in the league opener. 
  • Saint Peter's closed out the non-conference portion of the 2019-20 schedule with an overall record of 3-6, going 3-3 over the final six games after an 0-3 start to the season.
  • All three out of conference victories came against Northeast Conference members --- St. Francis Brooklyn, Fairleigh Dickinson, and LIU.
  • Saint Peter's dropped its final non-conference game of the season at Hampton on Dec. 28, falling 70-67 in a seesaw affair.
  • Freshman guard Daryl Banks III led the Peacocks with 17 points, while Bank's classmate Matthew Lee and senior forward Derrick Woods scored 10 points each in the defeat.
 
Things to Know Before the Conference Opener
Series History
  • Friday's conference opener will be the 122nd all-time meeting between Saint Peter's and Iona dating back to 1941-42.
  • The Peacocks trail the Gaels 50-71 in the all-time series, having dropped 10 straight meetings.
  • Last season, the two teams only met once during the regular season, with the Peacocks falling 62-46 on Feb. 15 in the road game.
  • The two teams then met in the MAAC tournament for the third straight season, with the Peacocks falling to the eventual champion, 73-71 in the quarterfinal round.
  • The Peacocks last defeated Iona in the regular season finale of the 2015 campaign on March 1, in a 68-60 victory.
  • The last time the two met in New Rochelle for the conference opener was exactly 10 years ago during the 2009-10 season, with Saint Peter's winning the game 56-54.

  • Charter MAAC member Saint Peter's will be seeking its third MAAC Regular season crown and fourth MAAC Championship title in 2019-20.
  • All-time, the Peacocks hold a 284-342 overall league record, posting 19 total seasons with a record above .500.
  • In conference openers, Saint Peter's is 20-18 all-time.
 
Second Half Surge
  • Saint Peter's closed out non-conference play by not being outscored by its opponents in the second half through the final eight contests --- the season opener was the lone game the Peacocks lost the second half scoring battle.
  • Over the final eight non-conference games, Saint Peter's outscored its opponents by a combined 47 points in the final 20 minutes of the game.
