Bryant Tops Men’s Basketball in Regular Season Opener Wednesday Night

Peacocks fell to Bulldogs 69-44

JERSEY CITY, NJ – It was a rough night in Jersey City for the Saint Peter's men's basketball squad, as the team fell to Bryant University 69-44 in the regular season opener.

How it Happened
  • First half shooting woes for both teams began with a combined 8-for-35 output with just under eight minutes to play in the half, leading to an 11-11 tied ballgame. The struggles continued for Saint Peter's but improved for Bryant as the Bulldogs put together a 13-2 rally that was capped off by a 9-0 run to put them ahead of the Peacocks 24-13.
  • The Peacocks would go into the half trailing 17-28.
  • Things didn't improve much in the second half, with Bryant pulling ahead by as many as 30 points with 3:18 remaining on the night.
  • Down by over 20 points late, senior forward Quinn Taylor refused to go down without a fight, scoring the final eight points for Saint Peter's to close out the evening.

Inside the Numbers
  • Taylor was the Peacock scoring leader in the opener, finishing his night with 14 total points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field.
  • Derrick Woods pulled in a career-high 11 rebounds and had the second best scoring output with seven points, while the trio of Aaron Estrada, Doug Edert, and Nazeer Bostick each scored six points.
  • Saint Peter's had trouble finding the basket in all three phases of the game, shooting just 25.4 percent from the floor, 20 percent from long range, and 61.5 percent from the charity stripe.
  • The Peacocks did manage to force 17 turnovers, converting them into 11 points.
  • The 17 first half points were the lowest scored in a half by a Peacocks team since scoring 16 points in the second half at Siena on Jan. 29, 2018.
  • On a positive note, the last time Saint Peter's lost by 25 points in a season opener was during the 2010-11 season, which ended in a MAAC Championship title.

Up Next
  • The men will travel north to the Ocean State, for a meeting with Big East foe, Providence College.
  • The game will be played at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. and will air nationally on FS2.
