Second Half Rally Leads to Comeback win for Men’s Soccer over CCSU at Peter Baldwin Classic

Goals by Wilber Nunez and Dominic Laws led to the 2-1 win

BURLINGTON, VT – After falling behind 1-0 in the first half, the Saint Peter's men's soccer team scored two second half goals to complete the comeback win over Central Connecticut State (CCSU) on day one of the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic in Burlington, VT. The win is the first for the Peacocks this season, as the team improves its record to 1-3.
 
Game Notes
  • The Peacocks controlled the pace of play from the opening kick.
  • Three quick offside penalties by the Peacocks kept the team from getting early shots off.
  • Within the first 35 minutes of play, the Peacocks had a header sail wide, a shot stopped by the keeper, and a goal disallowed.  
  • Despite the advantages by the Peacocks, CCSU scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute of the half (44:39), taking a 1-0 lead into the break.
  • Both the Peacocks and CCSU took six shots in the half, but the Peacocks posted a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Peacocks offensive aggression continued in the second half with the team logging back to back corner kicks and then the game tying goal.
  • In the 50th minute, senior Wilber Nunez scored the equalizer after the ball from his corner kick deflected off of a CCSU defender.
  • 10 minutes later in the 60th minute, sophomore Tom Coulson sent a feed from the midfield to classmate Dominic Laws on a breakaway leading to the game winning goal.
  • Following the Peacocks go-ahead goal, the team did not take their foots off the gas as the Peacocks still outshot CCSU 6-3 over the final 30 minutes of play.
 
Inside the Numbers
  • Nunez and Laws both recorded their first tallies of the season.
  • Coulson picked up the Peacocks first assist of the season after the previous three goals were all scored unassisted.
  • The Peacocks held game advantages in shots (16-14), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (5-4).
  • Sophomore keeper Robbie Anderson played the first half, while freshman goalie Jason Dubrovich made his collegiate debut in the second half.
  • Dubrovich made the Peacocks lone save of the game in the 68th minute, preserving the lead and win.
