Baseball's Ninth Inning Rally Comes Up Short at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Saint Peter's baseball team's late rally against hOURglass rival Rider on Friday came up short as the Peacocks fell in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meeting, 13-7. The Peacocks scored five runs in the ninth inning on top of two tallies scored in the eighth in an attempt to catch their rival after falling behind 13-0 after seven innings.

 

Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill) anchored the Peacock offense in the rally, earning three RBIs and scoring two runs over the last two innings. Anthony Ramos (North Bergen, NJ / North Bergen) tallied an RBI and scored two runs of his own.

 

After falling behind 13-0, Ciocco hit a two-run blast over the left field wall to put the Peacocks on the board.

 

After holding Rider scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, Peter Ferony (West Milford, NJ / West Milford) got the ninth inning rally started with a double. After Tom Campo (Pine Beach, NJ / Toms River South) was walked, Cole Robbins (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) hit a RBI double down the right field line for the Ferony run. Hunter Mason (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) got on base next by way of a walk, loading the bases, then Ramos followed with a walk, scoring Campo. After a Rider pitching change, Ciocco reached base on a fielder's choice, while Robbins crossed home plate for the next run. Jared Quintero (Paterson, NJ / Passaic County Tech HS) made it on base from balls loading the bases again in the inning with one out. Angel Perez (Jersey City, NJ / Marist HS) stepped up to the plate next and was also walked, scoring Ramos from third. Jesse Matos (Bayonne, NJ / Marist) kept the rally going, securing an RBI on a single through the right side that sent Ciocco home for the final score of the game. Following the RBI single by Matos, Ferony, who started the inning grounded into a double play to end the game.

 

The Peacocks and Broncs will conclude the series on Saturday, April 14 at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
