Softball Gets First Season Win Over Rider

BALTIMORE, MD - The Saint Peter's University softball team went 1-1 on the second day of the Coppin St. Classic. The Peacocks defeated Rider in the first game 7-6 and dropped the second 12-10 to Coppin St. The Peacock's overall record moves to 1-2.
 
"We had another exciting day of softball," said head coach Chris Stelma. "We did not end the way we wanted but we had a huge day out of Barbara Verrastro in the circle in game one. We had great leadership by our captains and the start of the season is looking good."
 
Game 1 vs. Rider
Saint Peter's started Barbara Verrastro who pitched 6.1 innings.
 
The first run for Saint Peter's was in the top of the first when Alina Guevara hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI single, scoring Nicole Feoli. Rider came back to score in the bottom of the first, tying the game 1-1. It wasn't until the top of the fourth that Tiffani Lambert scored a run from a Harley Connors double, to give Saint Peter's the 2-1 lead.
 
In the top of the fifth, the Peacocks broke into a four run stretch. Scoring for the Peacocks was Verrastro, Shamar Sanchez, Feoli and Guevara. The Peacocks led the Broncs 6-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. 
 
The Broncs tried to make a comeback as they scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth, trailing 6-4. The Peacocks scored another run in the top of the sixth from freshman, Michelle Kungleman for the Peacocks to lead 7-4. The Broncs scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth but the Peacocks took the win 7-6.
 
Game 2 vs. Coppin St.
The Peacocks struck early as they scored four runs in the top of the first, leading Coppin St. 4-0. Theamaris Ramirez hit a double to center field, advancing Guevara to third allowing Feoli and Sanchez to score a run each. Shortly after Verrastro hit an RBI to bring home Verrastro. In the bottom of the second, Coppin St. took the lead and scored six runs to lead the Peacocks 6-4. 
 
The Peacocks scored another run in the top of the third after Ramirez hit a double to left field which propelled Guevara to home to make it 6-5. In the top of the fifth the Peacocks tied the game after Feoli scored on a Guevara double to left field.
 
In the top of the sixth, Ramirez batted in two runs, advancing Feoli to third and bringing home Sanchez and Schieler Collins to lead 8-6. Brianna Hutchinson followed with a double to right center which allowed Ramirez and Feoli to score. The Peacocks led Coppin St. 10-6 going into the bottom of the sixth, but Coppin St went on to score six runs winning the game 12-10.
 
Next up
The Peacocks will wrap up the Coppin St. Classic on Monday March 5. The Peacocks will play Morgan St. at 2:30 p.m.
