Men’s Soccer Season Comes to an End in the MAAC Championship First Round

The Peacocks fell 1-0 to Marist in the quarterfinal game

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Saint Peter's men's soccer team had its 2018 season come to a close in the opening round of the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship. No. 6 Saint Peter's fell to No. 3 Marist 1-0 in the Sunday night contest.
 
Game Notes versus Marist
  • Saint Peter's (8-9-2) and Marist (8-5-4) played a scoreless first half, with both teams each logging one shot on goal.
  • The half was controlled by Marist, as the Red Foxes kept possession for most of the first 45 minutes.
  • Despite the 5-3 shot disadvantage by the Peacocks, the team held stout with stellar back play from Philip Smith and Anton Moore.
  • To open the second half, Marist got on the board first, getting a goal in the 48th minute from Allen Gavilanes.
  • With just under 8:30 remaining, Jordan Jowers got a good shot off from just outside the top of the box that deflected off a Marist defender, missing to the right.
  • In the 88th minute, Jowers got one final shot to try and score the equalizer, but the shot went wide.

Spectacular 2018 Season
  • 2018 was the highest regular season MAAC finish (sixth) for the Peacocks and the first time Saint Peter's qualified for postseason play since 2010.
  • The Peacocks put together the programs' best season under Julian Richens with eight overall wins and five MAAC victories on the year.
  • The Peacocks recorded three-straight clean sheet wins for the first time since the 2010 season from October 17 to 24.
  • This season was the first time that a Peacock squad scored four goals in consecutive games since 2007 (Oct. 13 vs. Niagara, 4-1 and Oct. 17 vs. Monmouth, 4-0).
  • This was the first season since 2013 that the program has had three separate players win a weekly award (Marco Torino, Frederik Lindqvist and Jason Dubrovich) and the first time since 2014 that the program has had two MAAC Offensive Player of the Weeks (Torino and Lindqvist) in the same season.
  • The Peacocks four seniors, Nick Marna, Wilber Nunez, Steven Parry, and Scott Rogers careers in Jersey City conclude.
