JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's fell to the Marist Red Foxes 66-58 Friday night in the Yanitelli Center. Junior, Talah Hughes, led the Peacocks with 16 points and five rebounds. Zoe Pero added 11 points and Janelle Mullen posted 10 points. Saint Peter's overall record drops to 3-18 and 2-10 in the MAAC.
"Our drive and kick game worked well in the first half, we didn't do as well in the second," said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina. In the first quarter Marist led the Peacocks 10-6 with under four minutes. Junior guard, Alyssa Velles, added a three-point shot to put the Peacocks within one point behind Marist at 10-9. The Peacocks stayed right behind the Red Foxes trailing 18-17 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Peacocks started to chip away as they went shot for shot with Marist falling three points behind at 22-19 in the first two minutes of the second quarter.Mullen would hit a three point shot to tie the score at 22 all. Marist then jumped back into the lead at 26-22 with two foul shots and a jump shot. Saint Peter's scored two more points before the Red Foxes pulled away to a 30-24 lead. The Red Foxes took the lead entering the half mark, 33-29.
"We had some open opportunities, they made their open shots and we didn't make open shots from the eight minute mark to the third minute mark, which has killed us all year" said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina. After halftime the Peacocks tied Marist at 33-33 early in the third quarter. The Red Foxes held the Peacocks at 33 as they took a 10 point lead 43-33 with four minutes to go in the quarter.Saint Peter's scored only six more points as they trailed the Red Foxes 50-39 at the end of the quarter.
Talah Hughes opened the fourth quarter with a three point jump shot, putting the Peacocks at an eight point deficit at 50-42. The Peacocks were unable to comeback as Marist leaped to a 15-point lead just under seven minutes to play at 61-44. The Peacocks were able to post eleven more points holding the Red Foxes to score only five before dropping the contest 66-58.
Maura Fitzpatrick led the Red Foxes with 17 points and eight rebounds while Rebekah Hand added 14 points and nine rebounds.
Next up the Peacocks will head to Fairfield on February 5 to face the Stags for the first time this season. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 2pm.
