JERSEY CITY, NJ - Saint Peter's women's basketball was defeated by the Fairfield Stags 56-39 on Tuesday night in the Yanitelli Center. Sajanna Bethea led the Peacocks posting 13 points and eight rebounds.
"We had 19 turnovers and didn't shoot the ball well so we have to take better care of the ball so we can have more opportunities to shoot ," said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina.
In the first quarter Hughes posted four of the eight points scored in the first 10 minutes. The Stags led 11-8 going into the second quarter.
The Peacocks posted the first two points to open the second quarter to put them one point behind Fairfield 11-10. Fairfield held the Peacocks to six more point before leading at the half 28-16.
"We have people who are capable to score the basketball we just have to find them and keep getting them shots," said Mangina.
Saint Peter's picked up the energy in the third quarter out rebounding the Stags 24-22. The Peacocks were able to add 11 points to the the board while the Stags added 12. At the end of the third quarter the Peacocks trailed Fairfield 40-24.
In the fourth quarter the Peacocks had a tough time closing in on the Fairfield Stags. Junior guard, Alyssa Velles posted five of the 12 points scored in the fourth quarter. The Stags finished the game defeating the Peacocks 56-39.
Kelsey Carey led the Stags with 19 points while Kristine Miller added 15 point and six rebounds.
The Peacocks will travel on the road to meet Canisius for the second time this season on February 16. Tip-off is scheduled to start at 7pm.
