Bethea Leads Women's Basketball in Season Opener at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's basketball team opened the season with a 91-49 defeat on the road at New Jersey rival, Seton Hall of the Big East. Senior Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) led the Peacocks in the opener with team-highs in scoring (eight points) and rebounding (nine rebounds).

 

The Peacocks came out with stellar defense to open the contest and in the first quarter. Saint Peter's opened the contest with a 4-3 lead behind put back layups from Bethea and Talah Hughes (Beacon, NY/Beacon). By the game's first break, the Peacocks were holding Seton Hall to 8.3 percent shooting in the game, but trailed 5-4. A midrange baseline jumper and a long two-pointer by Zoe Pero (Secaucus, NJ/St. John Vianney), extended the Peacock lead to 8-5. Seton Hall then went on a late 11-0 run, taking a 16-8 advantage, but a layup by Sammy Lochner (Abington, PA/Abington) cut the score to 16-10 to end the first quarter. Saint Peter's held Seton hall to 25 percent shooting (5-20) in the first quarter.

 

In the second quarter, the Peacocks fell behind 20-10 before Alyssa Velles (Franklin, CT/Norwich Free Academy) knocked down a trifecta on a feed from Samantha Meier (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan), bringing the game back to single-digits at 20-13. Seton Hall went back up by double figures, then Hughes notched a layup and a Bethea layup from  freshman D'Aviyon Magazine (Paterson, NJ/Queen of Peace) on a give and go, cut the deficit under 10 again, at 28-20. Seton Hall added another 11-0 run, off of seven Peacock turnovers making the Pirates lead grow to 19. Right before the half, Bethea scored to end the Peacock drought and Lochner added a three, to bring the score to 40-25 at intermission. The Peacocks continued to play good defense in the second quarter, holding Seton Hall to just 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from long range in the half. The difference in the half was Saint Peter's gave up 20 turnovers, which led to 22 points for Seton Hall.

 

Out of the break, the Peacocks stayed within the same deficit range of the Pirates, seeing scores by Bethea, Brianna Tarabocchia (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Northern Valley Demarest), and Dajiah Martin (Westbury, NY/Saint Mary's) as the Peacocks trailed 49-32. Then, Seton Hall went on a third run of the day, this time putting together a 15-0 run, that extended the lead over Saint Peter's to 64-32. Before the quarter ended, Magazine hit four free throws and Hughes added a layup on a cut to the basket to send the game into the final quarter at 69-38.

 

In the final quarter, Precious Featherson (Paterson, NJ/Rosa Parks) scored the Peacock's first three points, then Breana Spencer (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) made a layup off of a dime from Haley Dalonzo (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown High School South), making the game, an 85-43 deficit with 3:50 left. Ashlie Howell (Bronx, NY/Christ The King) anchored the next two Peacock baskets, feeding Anna Maguire for a layup and then hitting Dalonzo for layup. Maguire hit a runner, for the final basket of game to close out the afternoon with a 91-49 setback.  

 

Following Bethea on the scoreboard for Saint Peter's were Magazine with seven points, Hughes with six points, and Lochner with five points.

 

The women's basketball team is back on the hardwood in two days for the home opener. The Peacocks will host Lafayette at the Yanitelli Center on Sunday, November 12 at 1pm.
