Hughes Topped Her Career High in Loss Against Manhattan

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Manhattan defeated the Peacocks 69-65 on Sunday afternoon in the Yanitelli Center. Talah Hughes led the team topping her career high with 22 points and six rebounds. The Peacocks drop to a 2-16, 3-8 overall record.

"I can't fault our effort; It was a difficult loss for us," said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina.

The Peacocks got off to a slow start as the Jaspers jumped out to a five point lead 7-2 halfway through the first quarter. Hughes and Janelle Mullen got the Peacocks back into the game, registering a three-point jump shot each. The Jaspers led 11-8 at the end of the quarter.

At the start of the second quarter the Jaspers posted two points right away putting the Peacocks behind 13-8. Alyssa Velles answered with a three-point shot cutting the deficit to 13-11. Mullen posted eight of the 21 Peacock points scored in the quarter, putting the Peacocks in the lead 29-28 before halftime.

The Peacocks carried their momentum into the third quarter extending the lead over the Jaspers 37-33 with just under seven minutes on the clock. Manhattan gradually started to close in on the Peacocks tying the score at 42-42 just before taking the lead at 46-45 at the of the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Jaspers started to pull away from the Peacocks leading 51-46 with under eight minutes to play. With help from Hughes, the Peacocks started to come back, closing in on the Jaspers 62-60. Manhattan outscored Saint Peter's, 7-2 over the final 1:55 before Saint Peter hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to finish the game, 69-65.

"I thought we really played hard, if we keep playing hard and executing the way we executed today, wins will follow," added Mangina.

Janelle Mullen added 16 points and four assists, while Sam Meier scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.

Rider was led by Kayla Grimme with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Mikki Guiton added 15 points.

The Peacocks will head to Lawrenceville, NJ to face hOURglass rival Rider in their second meeting of the season on January 28. Tipoff is scheduled for 2pm.
