Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Peacocks were edged in a MAAC matchup, to the Canisius Golden Griffins 59-54 Friday night in the Yanitelli Center. Talah Hughes led the team with 14 points and nine rebounds while Janelle Mullen posted 12 points a five rebounds. Saint Peter's drop to an overall record of (3-14, 2-5).
"The first half we were in offense and we were moving the basketball and taking really great shots," said assistant women's basketball coach Phyllis Mangina. "Ultimately they made more shots than we did to win the game."
The Peacocks started the game with high energy as they quickly jumped to the lead 8-3 with two field goals from Mullen. The Peacocks then led the Griffins 14-9 going in the second quarter.
The Peacocks carried the momentum in the second quarter gaining a 10 point lead 19-9 after a field goal by Sam Meier and a three point jump shot by Alyssa Velles. The Peacocks let up the pressure as Canisius started to catch up to the Peacocks. However, the Peacocks kept their composure keeping the lead 26-20 just before Halftime.
After the break the Peacocks continued hard play before Canisius tied the game late in third quarter at 34. The Griffins then broke into the lead 37-36. The Peacocks fought back and tied one more time at 40-40 before ending the quarter behind the Griffins 42-40.
The Griffins jumped to a nine point lead at 55-46 but the Peacocks cut the deficit to one point at 55-54. With 25 seconds to go, the Peacocks were down three with a chance to tie the game. Hughes took the ball down the court and attempted the game tying three but a block by Canisius and defensive rebound lead to an intentional foul. Canisius finished the game with two late free-throws to secure the win, finishing the game 59-54.
Sara Hinriksdottir led the Griffins with 19 points and eight rebounds and Lauren D'Hont posted 13 points.
Next up the Peacocks will head to New York to play the Siena Saints on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 2pm.
