Box Score AMHERST, MA – The Saint Peter's Men's Soccer team and UMass Minutemen played to a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening at Rudd Field in Amherst, Massachusetts. Both teams fell short of their first wins of the season and records improve and pick up their first ties posting an identical 0-2-1 record.
"We worked incredibly hard today on the road against a very solid A10 team that made their conference playoff last year," said Saint Peter's Head Coach Julian Richens. "From the moment we scored, we started to control the game a lot better and showed some moments of real quality."
Both goals came in the first half of the game. UMass struck first 19 minutes into the contest on forward Alex DeSantis' goal that came from a free kick 30 yards out. The Peacocks would respond at the 42' mark with Luke Fairlamb's second goal of the season knotting the game at 1-1.
In the second half and overtime, both teams were aggressive and defense prevailed as neither could find the back of the net going a scoreless 65 minutes. The aggression of the second half and overtime lead to six total yellow cards (four by UMass and two by Saint Peter's).
"We had some opportunities to win the game, hopefully we should be converting over the next few weeks," added Richens.
Peacock starting goalkeeper Jamie Cleland finished the evening with five saves. Both teams logged four corners in the game and UMass outshot Saint Peter's by a slim 16-to-15 margin. Fairlanb owns Saint Peter's only goals of the season thus far.
The Peacocks return home on Wednesday, September 7, when they take on La Salle at Jaroschak Field with a 3 p.m. start time.
