Box Score JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Manhattan defeated Saint Peter's 7-2 on Senior Day at Jaroschak Field in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball action on Sunday.
Nick Camilleri (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) paced the Peacocks (9-39, 4-17 MAAC) with a two-run single while Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) posted the other hit for the Jersey City team in the loss.
It was Senior Day in Jersey City for seven Saint Peter's seniors. Prior to the game, Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township), Mike Doran (Ashbury, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township), John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South), Nathaniel Leon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Malloy), Jason Midkiff (Wanaque, N.J./Paramus Catholic) and Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) were honored and then all seven played in the game.
Cardamone, Kristoffersen, Leiter, Midkiff and Moore each opened the day in the starting lineup. Kristoffersen and Moore each scored on Camilleri's base hit in the fourth. Leiter took the loss after allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits with six strikeouts in six innings of work. Leon allowed an unearned run on two hits with one strikeout in 1.2 innings while Kristoffersen made his collegiate debut on the mound and allowed one walk before getting out of the ninth with a strikeout. Doran, who missed the majority of the season due to an injury, served as the first base coach for the first eight innings and then grounded out to end the game in his first at-bat in a Peacocks uniform.
Jose Carrera paced the Jaspers (20-28, 11-10 MAAC) with three hits, three RBIs and a run scored while Michael Pfenninger added two hits and three RBIs in the winning effort.
Manhattan jumped out to the lead and then was aided by some Saint Peter's miscues to pull away to complete the three-game sweep.
The Jaspers got the scoring started in the second with an RBI single to left by Anthony Rocchietti and an RBI groundout by Ryan Gronlier for a 2-0 advantage. Carrera increased the lead to three runs with a solo homer to leadoff the third.
In the fourth, Kristoffersen reached on an error and then stole second on a failed pickoff attempt. After Moore walked, the seniors pulled off a double steal and then Camilleri dumped a two-run RBI single to left field to score the two seniors and trim the margin to 3-2.
Manhattan added three unearned runs in the sixth after Pfenninger scored on an error and Carrera plated two more runs on a single through the right side for a 6-2 lead. Pfenninger then scored on an error after he stole third in the eighth to set the final score at 7-2.
Saint Peter's returns to action on Tuesday at Rutgers. Game time is 1 p.m.
