Niagara Takes Two From Saint Peter's Baseball

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Niagara swept a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) baseball doubleheader against Saint Peter's on Saturday. The Purple Eagles downed the Peacocks 22-2 in the opener and 13-0 in the nightcap.

Angel Perez (Jersey City, N.J./Marist HS) paced the Peacocks (4-17, 0-5 MAAC) with three hits and two runs scored while Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) and Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry) each knocked in a run on the day.

Tanner Kirwer powered the Purple Eagles (8-18-1, 4-1 MAAC) by going 5-for-8 with nine RBIs and five runs scored. Christian Vangeison added five hits, six runs scored and an RBI while Michael Furhman had four hits, three runs scored and three RBIs and Owen Dziados posted two hits, two runs scored and four RBIs in the nightcap.

In the opener, Niagara posted 18 runs in the first six innings of the game to take the lead and never look back for the victory.

After Kirwer stole third and scored on an error in the first, the Purple Eagles added an RBI double by Julian Gallup and an RBI single through the left side for a 3-0 lead after two innings.

Niagara then erupted for seven innings in the third for a 10-0 advantage. Vangeison started the rally with an RBI single to left before Gallup was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kirwer coaxed a bases loaded walk to force two more runs home. Greg Cullen then smacked a two-run single to right and Fuhrman capped the seven-run inning with a two-run double to right.

Saint Peter's got a run back in the third. With one out Perez singled up the middle and moved to third on Jon Kristoffersen's (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) double to right center. Perez then crossed the plated on Moore's RBI groundout.

The Purple Eagles made a 15-1 game after scoring five times in the fifth thanks to a Gallup three-run homer and RBIs by Furhman and Geoff Seto.

Niagara posted three runs in the sixth on a Kirwer three-run homer for an 18-1 margin.

The Peacocks registered a run in the eighth. Perez reached on an error, moved to second on a groundout and to third on an error before Ciocco hit an RBI infield single to trim the margin to 18-2.

The Purple Eagles capped the victory with three runs in the ninth on a two-run double by Joel Brophy and an RBI single to left by Greg Rodgers for a 22-2 victory.

In the nightcap, Niagara scored in four of the seven innings to earn the 13-0 win.

The Purple Eagles got the scoring started when Dziados walked with the bases loaded in the second before Gallup plated the second run on a bunt base hit and Kirwer added the third run on an RBI fielder's choice.

Niagara added four runs in the fourth to increase the lead to 7-0. Kirwer doubled home a run before two runs touched home on an error and Taylor Hackett hit an RBI single to right field.

Four more runs touched home for Niagara in the fifth thanks to a two-run doubles down the left field line by Dziado and Kirwer to extend the lead to 11-0.

A run-scoring double by Seto and a sacrifice fly by Dziados in the sixth sealed the 13-0 victory for the Purple Eagles.

Jake Regina (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) took the loss in the opener and Anthony Assante (Brick, N.J./Brick Memorial) took the loss in the nightcap.

Saint Peter's returns to action on Sunday when it completes the three-game series with Niagara. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
