Saint Peter's Baseball Falls At Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Wagner defeated Saint Peter's 13-5 in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday.

Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) paced the Peacocks (5-23) with three hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Jason Midkiff (Wanaque, N.J./Paramus Catholic) posted two hits and two RBIs while Angel Perez (Jersey City, N.J./Marist HS) added two hits and two RBIs in the loss.

Ben Ruta powered the Seahawks (10-18) with three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Trey Niscosia added two hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Nick Mascelli recorded a hit, two runs scored and an RBI in the winning effort.

Saint Peter's grabbed the early lead before Wagner scored 13 of the final 16 runs to earn its second-straight win in the series.

After the Peacocks regained the lead in the top of the fourth inning, the Seahawks took the lead for good in the bottom of the stanza. Ruta gave Wagner the lead it would not relinquish on a two-run double to right center and Kyle Cala scored on a wild pitch before Phil Capra hit a sacrifice fly to give the Staten Island program a 7-4 lead.

The Seahawks added three runs in the sixth to extend the advantage to six runs. After Nicosia started the rally with a run-scoring bunt single, Cala coaxed a bases loaded walk and Capra hit a sacrifice fly for a 10-4 margin.

Saint Peter's got a run back in the seventh. Mike Ionta (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) reached on an error, moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on Kristoffersen's RBI single to cut the margin to 10-5.

Wagner added three runs in the bottom of the inning after scoring a run on an error, the second run came home on a balk and a Mascelli brought home the third run on a sacrifice fly to give the Seahawks a 13-5 lead.

The Jersey City team scored a run in the ninth to set the final score at 13-6. Ionta reached on a fielder's choice, Moore walked and Spadaccini reached on an error to load the bases with one out.  Ionta then raced home to score on a wild pitch.

The Peacocks grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first. Perez opened the game with a double down the left field line. With two outs, Rob Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood) and James Spadaccini (Butler, N.J./Butler) walked to load the bases before Midkiff doubled down the right field line to score Perez and Moore.

Saint Peter's added a run in the third after Kristoffersen doubled to right and came around to score on Spadaccini's RBI groundout for a three-run lead.

The Seahawks tied the game in the fourth with three runs when Ruta hit an RBI single up the middle while the second run touched home on an error and Sean Mazzio plated the third run on an RBI single to left field.

Kristoffersen helped the Peacocks regain the lead in the next inning. Perez reached on an error and came around to score on Kristoffersen's second double of the afternoon to hand Saint Peter's a 4-3 lead. Wagner then took the lead it would not relinquish to earn the 13-6 victory.

Steve Epstein (Marlboro, N.J./Marlboro) took the loss for Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks return to action with a three-game series at Albany starting on Saturday. First pitch is 12 p.m.
