Leiter Fires Complete-Game Shutout To Lift Saint Peter's Baseball Past Fordham, 2-0

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. – John Leiter (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout to power Saint Peter's past Fordham 2-0 in non-conference baseball action on Saturday.

Leiter tossed his first career nine-inning complete-game shutout after allowing only two hits and one walk with eight strikeouts on the afternoon. The senior had a complete-game seven-inning shutout against Iona on Apr. 18 last year for his first collegiate shutout.

James Spadaccini (Butler, N.J./Butler) added two hits and an RBI for the Peacocks (2-7) while Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township) posted a hit, a run scored and an RBI in the winning effort.

Joseph Serrapica became the hard-luck loser in the pitchers duel after allowing two runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work. Joseph Runco and Ian Edmiston each posted a hit for the Rams (4-9) in the loss.

Leiter kept the Fordham hitters at bay and Saint Peter's scored twice in the fourth and held on to earn its second win on the year.

In the fourth, Kristoffersen broke a scoreless standstill with a solo home run to lead off the fourth. The senior had four roundtrippers in his first three collegiate seasons and now has four homers in 35 at-bats in 2016.

Jason Midkiff (Wanaque, N.J./Paramus Catholic) continued the rally in the fourth after Kristoffersen's homer with a ground-rule double to left. Mike Ionta (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) singled up the middle to put runners at the corners. With one out, Spadaccini singled through the left side to plate Midkiff to give the Peacocks a 2-0 edge.

Leiter retired the first 10 batters he faced. Edminston hit a ground-rule double with one out in the third to become the first Ram to reach base. Jason Lundy then reached on an error to put runners on the corners, but a pair of groundouts ended the threat.

Runco singled to left with one out in the sixth and stole second, but a strikeout and ground out got Leiter out of the inning. Leiter retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced in his second career complete-game shutout.

Ionta and Griffin Arnott (Brielle, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) each added two hits in the win for the Jersey City team.

Saint Peter's returns to action at Villanova on Sunday. Game time is 1:15 p.m.
