POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Saint Peter's women's basketball was triumphant over the Marist Red Foxes (73-69) on Sunday afternoon as Janelle Mullen notched a career-high of 20 points.
The last time Saint Peter's defeated Marist on the road was Feb. 10, 2002 which was also the last time they won the MAAC Championship and made an appearance in the NCAA tournament. The Peacocks downed the Red Foxes (66-51) at the McCann Field House that season. Saint Peter's reserves outscored Marist's bench 39-3 and had three players in double figures. Mullen posted her first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman, Sammy Lochner, followed Mullen with a career-high of 13 Points and five assists while Sajanna Bethea added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Leading the Red Foxes was Sophomore Maura Fitzpatrick with 25 points, and seven rebounds and Claire Oberdorf followed with 11 points six rebounds.
"This was a great team win," said head coach Pat Coyle. "We played with poise down the stretch and made plays when they had to be made."
Mullen was on fire, shooting one-hundred percent from the three-point arc and 50 percent from the field tallying 16 points in the first half. Saint Peter's competitive spirit carried them to a 10-point lead (40-30) just before halftime. The Peacocks held their own as they kept top scorers, Rebekah Hand to a season-low two points and Maura Fitzpatrick to four points in the first half.
There was no stopping the Peacocks as Lochner and Alyssa Velles dominated the three-point-line scoring two apiece. Offensive efforts from Lochner and Velles lead the Peacocks to strong 13-point lead (60-47) at the end of the third quarter.
An Early three-pointer by Maura Fitzpatrick and layup by Rebekah Hand helped boost a comeback as Marist slowly closed into a late game tie at 67-67. The Peacocks continued to keep their poise, scoring the final six out of nine points to seal the win (73-69) with a layup by freshman, Zoe Pero and four free-throws by point guard, Lochner.
The win was the first of the season for the Peacocks, who improve to 1-1 in the MAAC.
Next up...Saint Peter's will head on the road to play nationally ranked, University of Maryland on Thursday, Dec 8 at the Xfinity Center in College Park, MD. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm.
