JERSEY CITY, NJ - Junior guard Talah Hughes (Beacon, NY/Beacon) scored a game-high 18 points in the Saint Peter's women's basketball home MAAC season opener to Quinnipiac.
"Talah is improving over the first couple game; she can score with just about anybody in the country,"said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina. "She's done an incredible job against South Carolina, did a really good job against Maine and against some of the other competition we've been playing."
The Peacocks dropped the contest 51-84, on Thursday night, at the Yanitelli Center. Janelle Mullen followed with 10 points and Sajanna Bethea followed with nine points along with a team-high of eight rebounds. Freshman Sammy Lochner, tallied five assists and Brianna Tarabocchia notched her season high of six points and six rebounds against the Bobcats.
Leaders for the Bobcats were Vanessa Udoji with 16 points and Aryn McClure added a team-high of eight rebounds and Edel Thornton added seven assists.
"I was really pleased with how we played in the first quarter and how competitive we were; I thought we executed pretty decently" said Mangina. "The second quarter is where we ran into some trouble, they upped the tempo defensively especially in their 2-3 high and we turned the ball over too much."
Saint Peter's shot 80 percent from the free throw line grabbing 33 boards and tallying 10 assists.
"We have to get more consistent as a team, and do a much better job of distributing the ball," said Magina.
Next up… The Peacocks will head up I-87N to meet Marist for the first time this season. The game is scheduled to start at 2pm at the McCann Center.
