NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Saint Peter's women's volleyball dropped its final road contest of the season to the Iona Gaels 0-3 (19-25, 26-24, 22-25) on Wednesday night.
Meredith Przybocki led the Peacocks as she posted 9.5 points along with the team-high of eight kills. Amanda Colombo followed adding five kills and a team-best of 10 digs while Marlena Budna matched Colombo kills, adding five block assists.
The Peacocks got off to a good start as the they led early in the first set at 5-1. Iona answered with a short run as they closed in to tie the score at 8-8. The Gaels then went on a 10-point run that put them in the lead 18-9. The Peacocks kept pace as they came back scoring six points in a row cutting the score to 15-18. The Gaels held their ground as they rallied the Peacocks holding them to four more points before taking the win, 25-19.
In the second set, the Peacocks reached two early ties at five and eight before they pulled away leading 13-8. Saint Peter's kept a strong lead at 17-14 and 18-16 until the Gaels broke the deficit evening up the score at 18-18. Competitive play from both teams tied the score twice before the Gaels secured the extended set winning 26-24.
Identical to the first two sets there was a lot of energy at the beginning. The Peacocks rallied the Gaels reaching a tie at 10-10 just before falling behind two points at the midpoint mark. The Peacocks kept their poise as they were able to tie up the set once more at 14-14. Iona then managed to pull away, keeping the lead throughout the rest of the game. The Peacocks fought to stay in the game closing in at 18-20 before the Gaels finished the set 25-19.
"We unfortunately had to deal with some of the girls being sick tonight but resiliently fought hard," said head coach Monica Dempsey. "We're continuing to preach our message of mental toughness so we can gradually lay the groundwork for the future."
Saint Peter's will conclude the season this weekend on home court as they play against Marist this Saturday, Nov. 12 and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday against Siena.
