Women's Basketball Fall in Overtime Against Bowling Green

SPRINGFIELD, MA - Saint Peter's women's basketball suffered a tough overtime loss to Bowling Green State, 68-73, in the final game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic on Sunday.

 

"We did some really good things today," said head coach Pat Coyle. "Our offensive execution was where we needed it to be. We made some mistakes down the stretch that hurt us. We will go back and look at the film and make the necessary adjustments."

 

Power forward, Sajanna Bethea, led the Peacocks with her first double-double of the season against the Falcon. Bethea went 10-14 from the field as she posted 26 points and 10 rebounds in 40 minutes of playing time. Sophomore, Janelle Mullen, followed with 16 points and five assists and Talah Hughes added 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals.

 

The Peacocks got off to a good start as they scored the first four points of the first quarter. At the five minute mark, Bowling Green led 14-8 before Saint Peter's scored nine straight points to take the lead at 17-14.

 

Early in the second quarter the Peacock's pulled away gaining the lead as Bethea started the run with a three-point play followed by a jump shot. Saint Peter's continued to play as a team as Mullen added four free throws, Hughes added a three-point play and Meier posted a layup. Going into halftime the Peacocks led 37-26.

 

In the third quarter, Bethea posted eight points of the 10 total scored in the frame.

 

The Peacocks kept the energy, adding 18 points to the board in the fourth. Late in the game, the Falcons were able to make a comeback run leading 65-63 in the last sixteen seconds of the fourth quarter. The Peacocks pushed the ball down the court as Hughes drove to the basket making a layup with one second remaining, forcing the game into overtime.

 

Bethea opened up the overtime period with a three-point shot, giving the Peacocks a 68-65 lead. The Falcons were able to answer in the extra period, scoring the final eight points, taking the contest, 73-68.

 

"I am proud of the way we fought throughout the game," added Coyle. "We were up 11 then went down five late but we fought back and did a good job executing to send it into overtime"

 

Next up, Saint Peter's will head home to open up conference play against Quinnipiac on Dec. 1.
