Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Manhattan College on Saturday afternoon in heartbreaking fashion, conceding both goals with less than 15 minutes left in the contest.
"Another solid performance from the women," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. "We knew how Manhattan was going to play, we knew they'd have pace, and the team executed the game plan perfectly."
Genesis Castrellon scored her team leading fourth goal of the season for the Peacocks in the 21st minute of the game unassisted putting a floater from 20 yards out over the keepers hands into the back of the net. The Peacocks controlled the rest of the half and the first 30 minutes of the second half, keeping the Jaspers off of the board. With 77 minutes passed, Dylan Burns got the equalizer when she scored a put back goal off of a deflection with the Peacocks keeper Taylor McLean on the ground. Less than 10 minutes later at the 86th minute mark, Megan O'Connor scored the game-winning goal on a header received from Erica Modena's corner kick. The goal came with some controversy as the ball hit the crossbar and landed on the ground before being awarded as a goal.
"Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of a poor refereeing decision which Manhattan capitalized on and then conceded a controversial goal in the closing minutes," added Sherwood. "A bitterly disappointing end to a game we deserved to win. We are no strangers to adversity though and we look to bounce back at Niagara on Wednesday."
The Jaspers outshot the Peacocks 20-to-8, including a 12-to-2 second half advantage. Manhattan also posted 10 corners to Saint Peter's one. Peacock goalkeeper McLean made nine saves in the losing efforts.
The Peacocks are back in action when they travel to Western New York to face Niagara on Wednesday, October 12 at 3:00 p.m.
