Box Score FAIRFIELD, CT – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team played Fairfield University to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon in MAAC action, giving the Peacocks a point in conference play for the first time in over two year. Genesis Castrellon scored the equalizing goal for the Peacocks at the 60' mark.
"A tremendous result away from home for us today," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. "A resilient and committed performance from the players warranted a point for their hard work, which is what they deserved.
The draw ended a 24-game MAAC skid and five-game losing streak for the Peacocks. The tie also gives the team its first point in conference play since September 18, 2014.
Although the final score showed a tie, the advantage offensively was in Fairfield's favor. The Stags outshot the Peacocks, 43-to-7 and quintupled the Peacocks on corners with a 15-to-3 edge. The Peacocks back line and goalkeeper Taylor McLean played an outstanding match, only surrendering just one single goal in 110 minutes of action. McLean recorded her fifth double-digit save effort of the season with her 15 stops, while the team added two saves of their own for a total of 17 saves on the day compared to just one single save by the Stags keeper.
Fairfield struck in the first half when Alana Leahy's cross found Brenna Brown who scored on a header at the 29th minute. Saint Peter's responded with the equalizer in the second half when Castrellon found the back of the net off a pass from Kelsey Nugent for her team-leading third goal of the season.
"Once again my players have shown fantastic character, especially to bounce back from a tough loss on the road at Monmouth, and it speaks volumes of their courage and desire," added Sherwood. "I am thrilled for them to get a draw on the road for the first time in a long time in conference play."
The Peacocks return home for a noon meeting with Manhattan on Saturday, October 8.
