Box Score HAMDEN, CT – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team closed out the regular season in a 3-1 defeat at Quinnipiac University. Junior Alexandria Couto scored the lone goal for the Peacocks in the game.
"A wonderful individual effort to put us in front," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. "In spells, shortly after the goal, we passed the ball better than any game yet. I think the progression and improvement this group of players have shown this season has been immense."
The Peacocks jumped out to a 1-0 lead scoring their fastest goal of the season in the 9th minute. Couto found the back of the net on an assist from senior Nicole Rodriguez, giving Saint Peter's an early advantage. It took Quinnipiac over 20 minutes to score the equalizer and send the match into break at 1-1. The Bobcats added two more goals in the second half to close out the evening.
Couto's two shots of the day were both on goal with the one resulting in the tally. Kelly Jamison made four saves in her first start at goalkeeper on the season.
"Although we have not always gotten the results, the performance for the most part has been there" added Sherwood. "And on reflection, there are many positives for us to take moving forward."
The Peacocks finish the 2016 regular season with a final record of 1-13-2 and a 0-9-1 MAAC record. Seniors Genesis Castrellon, Jasmine Diaz, and Nicole Rodriguez conclude their careers.
Castrellon led the Peacocks with a team best four goals and two assists for 10 points. Couto followed with five points from two goals and one assist. Kelsey Nugent tallied one goal and one assist for three points, followed by Barbara Paiva and Brooke Trotta who each made one goal for two points. Rodriguez added an assist in her final season as a Peacock.
The Peacocks have a lot to look forward to in 2017 as the team made great strides in 2016 under new head coach Sherwood. The Peacocks earned a league point for the first time in over two years this season with its draw with Fairfield and the team took playoff qualifying Canisius to overtime last week on senior day. Saint Peter's also gave up 34 less goals than a year ago, cutting its average goals allowed per game from 4.64 in 2015 to 2.81 in 2016. Sherwood also has a great recruiting class joining the squad in 2017.
