Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Canisius College on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, NJ on senior day.
"An absolutely tremendous performance from my players today," said head coach Melissa Sherwood. " Both individually and collectively they gave absolutely everything that they had to give. We dominated the game in the large spells but couldn't find the break through in front of the goal."
In what was an absolute even battle for 90 minutes, the Peacocks, and the Golden Griffins put on a great performance on Senior Day for the many parents, students, and fans that were in attendance. In regulation, both squads each logged four corners; Canisius edged Saint Peter's 12-11 in shots; and both goalkeepers each made four saves in goal. The Peacocks also added one team save that came at the 75th minute when keeper Taylor McLean left the goal to make a play and the team stepped in to keep the go-ahead goal from being scored.
In overtime, Canisius became the aggressor, having three shots and two corners in overtime, to the Peacocks zero in both categories. The game-winning goal came from Melanie Linsmair at the 95th minute in overtime off of teammates Emily Czechowski's corner kick, ending the Peacocks day in heartbreaking fashion.
"Heartbreaking to concede off a set piece in a controversial overtime, but I'm proud of my players efforts today," added Sherwood. "I would also like to add that the crowd that came out today to support us were terrific and we are very appreciative of the support."
The Peacocks finish out the regular season on the road at Marist on Saturday Oct. 22 and then head to Quinnipiac on Wednesday Oct. 26 for the season finale.
