Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – Saint Peter's men's soccer erupted for three first half goals in a 3-0, shutout win over Niagara University on Wednesday evening. Senior defender Louis Mobbs scored the first two goals for the Peacocks in the win.
"We were very good in the first 45 minutes, very good," said head coach Julian Richens. "Two front runners, really combined very well and it was good to see the end product."
Mobbs scored the match opening goal just four minutes into the contest when Luke Fairlamb sent the ball over a wall of defenders that found Mobbs in the box where he beat the defenseman and put the ball passed the keeper on the far left corner. At the 21st minute, Mobbs scored his second goal of the game and third on the season, receiving a pass from Michael Crentsil that found a soaring Mobbs just feet in front of the goal where he put the ball and himself into the goal almost simultaneously. On the scoring play, the ball was passed from Crentsil, to Chris Rodrigues, to Crentsil, before finding Mobbs with ball movement that looked picture perfect. The trifecta came at the 40-minute mark with Ezequiel Cei feeding Gabrielle Bandelli in the box where Bandelli sent a rocket passed the diving Niagara keeper extending the lead to 3-0. In the first half, the Peacocks outshot the Purple Eagles, 7-to-0 and had a 6-to-0 corner kick advantage.
The second half was the complete opposite, as Niagara found themselves on the attack, but the Peacock defense did an excellent job not surrendering a goal and preserving the shutout win. Peacock goalkeeper, Jamie Cleland made all of his eight saves in the final 45 minutes and the Peacock defense that gave up zero shots in the first half, faced 14 total in the second.
"In the second half, the defense had a lot more to do," added Richens. "We were very solid and Jamie (Cleland) made a couple of good saves, while Jack (Fisher) and Reece (Lambert) looked very solid in helping to get the shutout on the backline."
With the win, the Peacocks record moves to 2-3 in the MAAC and the team's point total improves to six, earning three points from today's win.
The Peacocks will be back in action on Saturday, October 15 at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Siena.
