Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ – Senior defender Louis Mobbs found the back of the net for the game-winning goal with under one minute remaining, to propel Saint Peter's men's soccer to a 1-0 victory over hOURglass rival Monmouth.
"It was a big win for us to kick start our MAAC play, and it was three points that we needed," noted head coach Julian Richens. "They are always a very tough team to play against and you have to be on it for a full 90 minutes, which we were today, if you are going to beat Monmouth."
After missing the last five out of six games, Mobbs returned to the lineup, making an immediate impact with his aggressive play. Not only did he score the game-winning goal, which was his first tally of the season, he also led the team with his four shots, three of which were on goal.
The entire match was pretty much even for the first 89 minutes. With a scoreless contest, and overtime looming ahead, Luke Fairlamb was able to push the ball ahead getting it to Andrew Romero on the far left side of the field. Romero put a perfect cross into the box, which was headed in by Mobbs 6'2 frame giving the Peacocks a 1-0 advantage with 20 ticks remaining on the clock.
"The backline was tremendous and it was good to see Chris Stragapede come in for the last 45 minutes after being out for so long with his knee injury," added Richens. "When you win games like that, it is great for team spirit and there is no better team spirit than winning games. It's as simple as that."
Both the Peacocks and the Hawks had 10 shots each, and the Hawks posted a 5-to-3 corner kick advantage. Winning keeper Jamie Cleland earned his first win of the season for the Peacocks, making two saves in goal.
The Peacocks overall record improves to 2-6-2 and 1-1 in the MAAC. Saint Peter's are back in action when they host Fairfield on Wednesday, October 5 at 3:00pm.
