Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Niagara Purple Eagles (4-10, 2-3 MAAC) defeated the Saint Peter's Peacocks (3-11, 1-4 MAAC) 52-48 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball action on Friday.
Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) was just shy of a double-double, pacing the Peacocks with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) followed with 17 points and 15 rebounds, her second double-double of the season after tallying 21 points and 10 rebounds against Monmouth on January 6, 2016.
Taylor McKay led the Niagara Purple Eagles with 14 points and 6 rebounds followed by Sam Lapszynski with 10 points and 9 rebounds. Kaylee Stroemple recorded 9 points and 6 rebounds.
1st period
Hala Mostafa opened up the first quarter with a three-pointer. Taylor McKay of Niagara then scored two field goals. Corelli of Niagara put up a jumper. Talah Hughes fouled Emily Granhurt who made two of three free throws. Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) and Talah Hughes both made layups at the end of the quarter, bringing the score to 8-7 with Niagara leading.
2nd period
Kaylee Stroemple opened the second quarter with her first field goal of the game. Mostafa made a layup and a free throw by Taylor McKay tied the game at 11-11. A 4-0 run toward the end of the quarter put the Peacocks in the lead 19-15.
3rd period
The teams rallied back and forth in the beginning of the third quarter until Kaylee Stroemple and Tiffany of Corselli drained three-pointers, putting Niagara in the lead 28-26. A layup by Hughes tied the game at 28-28. Niagara took the lead ended the quarter 34-33.
4th period
Mostafa opened up the quarter with a layup. Kaylee Stroemple followed with a field goal. The teams rallied back and forth until the Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run at the end of the quarter. The Peacocks close the home stretch hosting the Fairfield Stags on Sunday at 2pm.
