Box Score JERSEY CITY, NJ - Hala Mostafa and Sajanna Bethea combined for 36 points, including seven points in the decisive final three minutes to power Saint Peter's past Monmouth 67-62 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.
After Sarah Olsen gave the Hawks (4-9, 2-2 MAAC) the lead for the final time at 61-60 with 2 minutes and 48 seconds left, Bethea tallied four points and Mostafa added three, solidifying the win.
Mostafa shot 7-for-13, and 1-3 from 3-point land 2-2 at the charity stripe to finish with a career-high 21 points while adding 10 boards to register her first collegiate double-double. The senior bested her previous career-high of 19 points against Lehigh University earlier this season on November 25, 2015. Bethea finished the game with 17 points and six rebounds.
Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) also scored in double figures with 14 points and added seven rebounds and four assists.
1st period
Bethea of the Peacocks put up eight of 12 points for the Peacocks in the first quarter. The team rallied back and forth until the Hawks went on a 5-0 run, ending the first quarter leading 17-12.
2nd period
A free throw by Jamiyah Bethune of the Hawks brought the score to 18-12. Mostafa tallied two field goals assisted by Samantha Meier (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan). With just over four minutes remaining in the quarter, Alyssa Velles (Franklin, Conn. / Norwich Free Academy) hit a three-pointer. Jasmine McCall and Jamiyah Bethune tallied two field goals while Meier made two layups in a row assisted by Marcia Senatus (Roselle, N.J. / Trenton Catholic). Senatus hit a jump shot with three seconds remaining in the half, bringing the score to 32-27 with the Hawks in the lead.
3rd period
Meier drilled a jumper at the eight minute mark in the third quarter. Jasmine McCall made a layup and Hala Mostafa tallied a field goal just under a minute later. McCall posted a layup and a jumper in the third quarter while Hughes posted three field goals. Mostafa ended the quarter with a free throw and a drove to the hole for another basket, bringing the score to 43-42.
4th period
A free throw by Sajanna Bethea tied the game at 45-45. A free throw by Talah Hughes tied the game again at 48-48. The Peacocks then took their first lead of the game. The Hawks pulled up until a three-pointer by Hala Mostafa tied the game at 59-59. A jump shot and two free throws by Sajanna Bethea put the Peacocks in the lead. A 6-0 run at the end of the fourth quarter solidified the win for the Peacocks, bringing the score to 67-62.
The Peacocks will host the Niagara Purple Eagles on Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
