Box Score Sajanna Bethea (Levittown, Pa. / Pennsbury) and Hala Mostafa (Cairo, Egypt / Modern Narmer Language School) combined 31 points to power the Saint Peter's Peacocks (4-11, 2-4 MAAC) past the Fairfield Stags (6-9, 1-5 MAAC) 56-46 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women's basketball action on Sunday.
The teams rallied back and forth during the first half, but the Peacocks were able to maintain the lead after going on a 13-2 run in the third quarter.
Bethea paced the Peacocks with 16 points and eight rebounds. Mostafa was just shy of her third double-double of the season, tallying 15 points and nine rebounds. Talah Hughes (Beacon, N.Y. / Beacon) followed with 12 points and five rebounds.
Casey Smith led the Stags with 13 points and four rebounds followed by Kristin Schatzlein with nine points. Helena Orts tallied seven points and three rebounds.
1st period
The team rallied back and forth in the first quarter with a jump shot by Savanna Bethea putting the Peacocks in the lead. A field goal by Rebecca Sparks (Teaneck, N.J. / Teaneck (Saint Francis)) and a layup by Casey Smith of Fairfield brought the score to 10-8.
2nd period
In the second quarter, neither team was able to get beyond a two point deficit of one another. The Peacocks remained in the lead 20-19.
3rd period
Saint Peter's started the third quarter with a 13-2 run, bringing the score to 33-21. They were able to maintain the lead despite field goals by Khadidiatou Diouf of Fairfield. At the end of the quarter, the Peacocks led 37-25.
4th period
The Stags attempted to close the gap with field goals by Helena Orts early in the fourth quarter. Kristen Schatzlein of Fairfield hit a three-pointer, bringing the deficit to five. Bethea drained a three-pointer and Mostafa and Hughes hit free throws to solidify the win.
